Mission Codename The spirit of the times
Bonus buy, you found it!
Chapoutier winemaker’s own passion project, with 94 points, at 25 bucks. Don’t you overthink it, just drink it. That’s exactly what we did and had to put hard brakes on to save you some.
As we licked the insides of our glasses (yes, one of the risks of this business is long tongues) we kept reading the Wine Advocate praise below on repeat, dreaming of finding more of this.
“Vigneron Gilles Troullier ranks up with the best of the best in the Roussillon, and his tiny estate continues to fashion a bevy of beautiful wines that do everything right. Unfortunately, they’re all made in miniscule quantities are hard to come by… These latest releases from Gilles Troullier show how much talent this guy has. Possessing a degree in biodynamic viticulture and oenology, he owns some top vineyards, and his wines marry the richness and depth of the Roussillon with elegance, purity, and focus. All of these new releases are highly recommended.”
Just hitting its stride with a decade of cellar dust, it’s still primary and youthful, with just the right touch of mellowness that weakens the knees. Châteauneuf-du-Pape fans especially, do not miss this one!

94 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“These awesome wines are made by Gilles Troullier, who was the former winemaker/cellar master for Chapoutier’s Roussillon efforts. Now focusing solely on his own estate, he’s producing some of the most exciting wines from the region. Looking first at his Grenache cuvée, the 2011 VDP Côtes Catalanes L’Esprit du Temps (100% Grenache from vines planted in 1930, aged 12 months in demi-muid) is beautiful, with medium to full-bodied richness, fine, silky tannin and a rock star finish. Possessing loads of kirsch, strawberry, leather, garrigue and hints of violets, it is an elegant, seamless and perfectly balanced Côtes Catalanes that will evolve gracefully for at least 10-15 years. Drink 2014-2029.”
