Mission Codename The Big Little Brother

“One of the biggest names in Italian wine.” – Wine Spectator

Ornellaia! And make that a magnum, baby! Slash the price by over 50% off and light up the stage.

What other Super Tuscan can get Antonio Galloni to say; “The Ornellaia team has done a fabulous job with these wines, which have never failed to literally send shivers down my spine…”

We have not just 1 but 2 vintages available today, could not pick one over the other! The 2016 is readier to drink, yet that gorgeous packaging makes the 2017 a sure bet collectible too, that ‘20’ on its label commemorates the illustrious history of La Serre Nuove.

Though we must emphasize that these mags are NOT of ‘Ornellaia’ per se, for those you’d be spending about 6 times more. Yet La Serre Nuove is not exactly a ‘second wine’ either…

Axel Heinz, the genius behind these wines, is adamant this is understood, a Decanter article points out; “The winemaker for Bolgheri estate Ornellaia has said the term ‘second wine’ should be phased out to convince consumers that they are not just second best. ‘Serre Nuove is a true second wine at Ornellaia in that it is not second-rate version of the flagship wine,’ Heinz told. ‘It still has to stand up as a fine wine in its own right, not lie in the shadow of Ornellaia.’ He said the distinction between the two wines would be further enforced in future with specific vineyards on the 100-hectare estate being allocated for Serre Nuove.”

Decanter further explains “Le Serre Nuove is arguably the ‘business card’ for Ornellaia, offering an insight into how the grand vin might age – in top vintages, the differences between Le Serre Nuove and its bigger brother are truly minimal… Support of the fact that Le Serre Nuove is complementary to Ornellaia lies in the numbers: the former has a production of 250,000 bottles, the latter 150,000… Most of all and generally speaking, in times of increasingly priced fine wines, second wines provide polite options against ostentation, elegant alternatives for everyday fine wine drinking… Born in the shadow of Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove today shines by itself, crowned as the best Italian second wine.”

Once you grab what you can, here are a couple of comprehensive Forbes articles to check out too:(1) and <a https://www.forbes.com/sites/karlaalindahao/2019/08/27/object-of-desire-le-serre-nuove-dellornellaia-2016/?sh=5dffd41451db”>(2)<a

Note that by default these will ship in the original wood case packaged inside cardboard, if you need ICE PACKS, you will not be receiving the wood cases.

Still can’t believe we were able to slip these under $100 per piece for you all the way from their original $230, which in comparison to what their flagships Ornellaia or Masseto cost these days, was a slick, slick deal to begin with. In fact, some retailers are charging MORE for 750s of these than what we are offering these MAGS at today, carpe diem while they last!

94 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“This is a fantastic interpretation from Bolgheri. The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is made with fruit from the same vineyard plots that go into the Bolgheri Superiore, only this is a second selection if you will. Generally speaking, fruit from the younger vines goes here. This wine gives us a very pretty glimpse of what we can expect of the high-end releases from this classic vintage. The fruit is rock solid, delineated, tonic and firm. The pleasure factor awarded here is very high thanks to the wine’s inner softness, silky tannins and soothing extract. The bouquet is seamless and pristine. Drink 2018-2028.”*

94 Points – Jeb Dunnuck

“Showing beautifully, the incredibly impressive 2016 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia (44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, and 12% Cabernet Franc) is a true second wine from this estate, following the similar practice in Bordeaux of offering a second wine basically made from the grapes that didn’t rate the top cuvee. Don’t let that deter you, though, as this is a terrific wine. Its deep ruby color is followed by a ripe, complex bouquet of black cherries, blackberries, tobacco, and earthy, herbal characteristics. Gorgeous on the palate, with medium to full body, a wonderful freshness and purity, and silky tannins, it’s already drinking nicely but will keep for 10-15 years. Drink 2019-2034.”*

94 Points – James Suckling

“Appreciate the aromas of crushed stones and currants that follow through to a full body, velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of dark-berry and walnut character in the aftertaste. Beautiful second wine of Ornellaia. Already very attractive, but better after 2022.”

93 Points – Wine Spectator

“Supple and polished, exhibiting plum, black cherry, wild thyme and spice aromas and flavors. Solidly built, yet harmonious and approachable now, with hints of iron and cedar on the lingering finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2033.”

93 Points – Decanter

“Dense, deep red with aromas of cassia, spice and pepper and a taste of plums. Long, very expressive finish.”
