Mission Codename Once a classic

“Proprietor Cam Baker and his winemaker Dan Petroski continue to prove irrefutably what a first growth terroir Larkmead possesses.” – Robert Parker

Larkmead in the house!! As usual, this premier Napa Cab brings a party bus of big scores along for the ride. SEVEN big ones packed in there! Wine Enthusiast leads the charge with 97 points, then you have two 95s and a bunch of others. Wow!

One thing they all agree on - this is a straight-up kickass Cabernet. And we got it at the best price in the known universe, too.

In our long history, few samples generated such a heated four-way Rochambeau fight to see who took the remainder home. In the end, we decided to order some Butcher Crown Roadhouse BBQ and split it between us over lunch. The brisket was off the charts. Goodbye productivity, hello naptime!

One taste and you’ll want to share it with everyone who loves a great wine. But you’ll also want to hoard it all to yourself. We call that a conundrum. Vinous called this wine, from one of Napa’s best ever vintages, “the hidden gem in this range”. “Beautifully multidimensional” as Decanter put it. Simply busting with all sorts of ripe dark fruits and savory goodness. Black raspberries, redcurrant, graphite, cedar, violets - it’s all wrapped in there just waiting to evolve for many, many more years to come.

Hardcore collectors know all about Larkmead.

As Mr. Parker noted, they own one of the most profound properties in Napa, with an unrivaled terroir that powers remarkable complexity in the wines. Under the direction of winemaker Dan Petroski they hit new heights and it’s worth mentioning that 2019 is the last Larkmead made under his watch, to focus on his own label Massican. Avery Heelan takes the helm, who comes fresh out of Screaming Eagle camp - and we can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Hardly enough for an offer - don’t miss your chance!

97 Points – Wine Enthusiast

“This red is earthy in tones of barnyard, sage and crushed rock, with underlying plush fruit. With 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc included, it boasts rich red fruit that broadens and lengthens the midpalate. It shows an enduring succulence on the balanced finish.”

95 Points – James Suckling

“Pretty aromas of currants, walnuts and fresh tobacco follow through to a full-bodied palate with dusty, chewy tannins and lots of berry, coffee and lightly toasted-oak undertones in the aftertaste. Needs some time to resolve the tannins. Very drinkable now, but better after 2025.”

95 Points – Decanter

“Very savoury and spice-laden on the nose, showing aromas of cigar box, chicory, sandalwood and redcurrants. The palate is beautifully multidimensional: deep but bright, weighty and forward but with great length and integration. A definitive showing of Calistoga, built for at least two decades in the cellar but will also reward those who want to check in at an earlier stage. Brought up in 66% new French oak.”
