Mission Codename Darth Maul
Ready for a massive, heart-pounding, Venge-Fayard-made, Rutherford-vineyard-sourced, 95 POINT Cabernet blockbuster that will rock you to your core?? A smashing good wine that takes you from zero to “OH HELL YEA LFG” from the moment the first drop hits your tongue?
Here you go. And wait - how ‘bout that price? Was $75 and today (while it lasts at least…) it’s way, WAY down to $35.
Beau Vigne - those in the know recognize them as an original cult winery best known for their 100-point Reserve Cabernet. Robert Parker labeled them “one of my favorite wineries.” A true gem of Napa Valley. With fruit from this wine sourced primarily from estate vineyards on Atlas Peak and Rutherford vinified by the supremely talented Kirk Venge, you know the standards are high. Venge cranks out hit after hit for his own label along with B Cellars, Jax, Macaulay, Croix, and Hunnicut to name a few.
What’s fascinating is that this wine has not one but TWO superstar winemakers. While Venge started it, for the finishing touches he passed the baton at Beau Vigne over to Julien Fayard. That’s crazy folks, like a Picasso with finishing touches by Chagall, as Fayard’s resume is similarly overflowing with the likes of Lafite Rothschild, Smith Haut Lafitte, Melka, Quintessa, Realm, and Covert Estate.
The Tasting Panel signals what’s to come: “To be sure, Fayard brings technical expertise as well as experience in crafting luxury wines, but it’s his relationships with many of Napa Valley’s most prestigious vineyards that will continue to elevate Beau Vigne into the future. This includes renewed contracts with both longtime sources like Beckstoffer Vineyards’ Georges III Vineyard and up-and coming estates… In stewarding a legacy brand like Beau Vigne, he believes it’s important to maintain customer expectations by remaining true to the original style while making incremental changes to improve upon it.”
The almost unfair ‘dual lightsaber’ approach really shows gloriously in the glass
Both winemakers somehow imprinted their trademark styles on this one. Dark purple and rippling, nay PULSATING with a core of sweet blue, black and red fruits. A mashup of blueberry and blackberry, black plums, Bing cherry, and a drop of sweet black licorice, with some dusted baking spices on top. Smooth, sultry and mouthcoatingly delicious from front to back, as the finish enters a seemingly endless loop of textural richness. Totally irresistible stuff! Can only imagine what would become of this in the presence of a Tomahawk steak, but at this price, it’ll even take weekday burgers to a whole new level.
Do yourself a favor and get some of this TWO FOR ONE cult winemakers’ masterpiece.
After all, how many other Kirk Venge OR Julien Fayard Cabs can you find at this price??
95 Points – The Tasting Panel
“Blended with 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot and aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, this Cab exudes a plethora of floral notes, with dried violets and earth at the forefront. Bold, generously built, and elegantly appointed, it has a grand presence, showing off graphite and espresso integrated with teeth-coating plum-skin tannins.”
