Mission Codename Zero to twenty sixteen

Back by popular demand!!

98+ point Brunello in the house! Terrific price, too, but very little to go around sadly. This’ll be fast and furious like a droptop red Lambo unleashed on Autostrada A16 so buckle up!

Their ‘15 was one of our all-time favorites. We secured every drop of the ‘16 which takes things up a notch or three on the tachometer. Exotic car buffs, listen up, it’s the Aventador that leaves a Huracán in the rear-view mirror.

Dunnuck is spot on, it really “lifts off the palate” - but that’s 2016 for you. A high water mark for Brunello, and this is one you need to experience.

He continues to rave and zoom in “I am humbled by the opportunity to become a critic for the wines of Italy and cover the outstanding 2016 releases of Brunello … a classic vintage of impeccable balance. The wines overarchingly have freshness, with more apparent tension than the 2015 vintage. Overall, I tend to prefer the 2016 vintage for its vibrant personality, and for showcasing hallmark traits of the region and style.” and like that’s not enough praise, for the sector Pietroso is in he points out that “wines from the area have a tendency to produce some of the most structured and chiseled styles of Brunello in the region.”

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous points out that “The estate was bought by Domenico Berni, nicknamed Belfo, in the 1970s (he was the fattore or main farmhand of Villa a Tolli, Poggio Salvi and others) with the objective to make wine for home use. He started out with 0.5 hectares but as everyone told him his wine was too good to be limited to family consumption, he began selling some with the 1978 vintage.”

Fast forward a bit: “Since 2010 they have been farming a small plot of vines at the top of the Montosoli hill that has been replanted to Sangiovese. The estate’s goal is to make a single vineyard or a Brunello selection from this very prestigious site, apparently blessed with a slightly warmer microclimate than the estate’s other sites… Pietroso’s wines have improved immeasurably over the last decade.”

And obviously, they continue to improve. Next stop 100 points?

Move quickly on this one.

We give it a couple of hours before selling out.

98+ Points – Jeb Dunnuck

“The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is rich in aromatics of black raspberry, menthol, sage, and lavender. It is fruit forward upfront, with pure cherry fruit, balsamic, and black tea with classically structured tannins and acidity that lifts off the palate and a long finish. It was aged for 6 months in tonneaux followed by two years in large barrels. Cellar 2-4 years and enjoy 2024-2036.”
