Looking for the perfect Valentine’s Day wine? Or just another smashing good deal on a gorgeous Super Tuscan styled Mt. Veeder blend of Cab + Sangio from our good friends at Random Ridge?

Here it is.

Winemaker/proprietor Bill Hawley is just a plain old, cool-ass dude and Random Ridge is a true insiders’, old school, locals-only type winery found on the backside of Mt. Veeder. Pioneered by Hawley, at an elevation of 2,400 feet they’re one of the highest wineries in Napa! Bill snagged this beautiful Mayacamas property in 1979, with a Walden-esque vision. He built a house out of recycled lumber for his family, planted 9.5 acres in the rugged volcanic soil, and has been steadily cranking out killer wines for almost thirty years.

This is a blend of 55% Cabernet and 45% Sangiovese. In this vintage, he bumped that Cab percentage up to give it a little more heft, but it’s still more of a medium to full-bodied effort, flowing with beautiful red and black fruits. The perfumy nose is soaked in all shades of cherries and berries. The palate melds mountain tannins from the Cabernet with a lift from the juicy acidity of Sangiovese, bringing the best of both worlds together. The deceptively delicious and balanced concoction builds up to a seriously long finish, with waves of love in the air as depicted by the catchy label. Think of it as a liquid box of dark chocolate-coated cherries!

He doesn’t send these wines for scores, but a long-lost snipped from Robert Parker confirms Bill’s “excellent winemaking… difficult to resist” style that we’ve come to love so much.

Oh, and the 2019 vintage? Bigtime at play here, as Wine Advocate predicted “it’s clear that 2019 has produced styles that perhaps better match consumer expectations of an outstanding Napa Valley vintage… lovers of Napa Valley red wines in their more classic ripe, juicy, plush forms will want to hop on some of the 2019 offers when they come through and stock up.”
