Mission Codename In sheep's clothing

If you are one of the 100 or so Operatives who were able to snap some of that 100-pointer 2015 Giodo Brunello we featured just about 6 months ago, you know the name well. That one cost about $100 a pop, which is still a phenomenal price for a phenomenal collectible that normally goes for $140-180, that is IF you can locate some out there. This “Baby Brunello” therefore, should naturally come as a crazy good bargain no doubt, however, there sadly wasn’t enough available when we got to it to make a day’s run.

So here it is, while it lasts…

And for those of you who are new to Giodo, here’s what you need to know:

Giodo’s proprietor is none other than Carlo Ferrini, whom Jancis Robinson calls “one of the most celebrated of the winemaking consultants that have been so vital to the Italian wine scene – possibly the most famous, as three times he has been awarded winemaker of the year.” And what do GREAT winemakers pamper most? THEIR OWN! Giodo is Ferrini’s passion product. His baby.

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous aptly underlines why this is such a compelling offer, “Carlo Ferrini, the renowned Italian winemaking consultant that worked with well-known Brunello estates in the past (Casanova di Neri, Castello Romitorio, Poggio Antico, Talenti) started his own project in Montalcino in 2002 when he found 2.5 hectares of land suitable to making great Sangiovese wines. Ferrini’s first vintage was 2009, from which he made 3,000 bottles. Today the estate owns 5.5 hectares (2.5 hectares of Brunello and 3.5 of IGT Toscana Rosso, also planted to Sangiovese). The vines are located between 300 and 400 meters above sea level, essentially near the Lisini estate and in the Sesta area. He planted his vineyard with what he believes are the best Sangiovese clones he has worked with over the years. The estate’s name, Giodo, is an acronym of his parents’ two names, Giovanna and Donatello.”

Can’t think of a better weekday red for lovers of Brunello - or anyone who wants to experience the ethereal power and elegance of Tuscany’s finest.

92 Points - International Wine Report

“The 2013 Giodo is a gorgeous effort from one of Tuscany’s most accomplished enologists, Carlo Ferrini. This wine dazzles with pretty aromas of dark cherries and wild berries along with spring floral, sweet spices, and eucalyptus notes emerging from the glass. On the palate this is elegant and refined, showing wonderful structure and balance with fine, silky tannins and a beautiful touch of acidity which carries over onto the long finish. A lovely showing and should only become more complex as it evolves over the next few years. Best 2018-2027.”
