Mission Codename Liquid sunshine
Spring is in full bloom; it’s getting warmer by the day out there!
Lovers of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Albariño - or any similar wildly zippy, zesty, summer-lovin’, hyper-fresh whites – we IMPLORE you – let this juicy goodness into your lives.
Today we direct your attention to Verdejo - that uncommon varietal from Rueda, Spain, “caught at a mouthwatering moment…”as Wine & Spirits points out in their 91-point rave.
Spain leads the pack when it comes to delivering crushing value. Case in point - this zippy, fruity, white that delivers a blast of citrus fruit. It tastes like “man, life is good” but more specifically, it’s bursting with green apple, white flowers, nectarine, pear, and lemon with a hint of fennel. A bit of neutral oak gives it some weight, but that buoyant acidity rises straight to the top and keeps it flowing. So clean. So pretty. And what a perfect wine with food. Get some Baja fish tacos with a pineapple slaw and you’ll be in pairing heaven. Or a dozen oysters. Or both.
A Decanter spotlight points out that “Verdejo is the grape that put the little region of Rueda on the world wine map, where it’s made into some of Spain’s finest white wines… Prior to its rise in Rueda, Verdejo had been a relatively under-appreciated variety… A typical young Verdejo wine appears pale greenish yellow in the glass, with flavors to match — fennel, grassy and citrus notes, as well as hints of stone fruits like white peach. Its herby citrus character has much in common with Sauvignon Blanc.”
Bingo!
Thirsty yet? We’re droolin’ here, and in our opinion, get a few bottles more than you think. We’ve never come across a Verdejo this good for just $15!! At this no-regrets price you just can’t go wrong!
91 Points – Wine & Spirits
“From a cooperative based in the village of La Seca, this is made from 35-year-old vines. It’s Verdejo caught at a mouthwatering moment of ripe peach flavor, still holding its firm acidity. Smoky and leesy, it will take on grilled sardines.”
