Mission Codename Year by year

“In my mind, Ramey is one of the top wineries in the United States.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

The one and only DAVID RAMEY has done it again. He made another timeless Napa Cab, earning 95 big points from Wine Advocate, along with FOUR 93s in the process.

No surprise there, really. He does have the “Master’s Touch” as Wine Spectator once said.

But then we come in and drop the world’s lowest price into your lap.

RAMEY. Collectors and critics know the name well. As Galloni says, “it’s hard to know where to begin… as there are so many highlights.”

The Times’ Eric Asimov concluded Ramey makes one of Napa’s most classic Cabernets.

He trained at the legendary Château Petrus, then forged a path here at Dominus, Rudd Estate, and Chalk Hill. His Chardonnay and Cabernet are peerless examples in the industry. We could dredge up a lot more praise, but you probably already know the drill.

And in a world where Napa Cab prices seem to be falling upwards, we have this beauty for a steal. It’s a fascinating example, in a style of its own really. There’s a solid chunk of dusty black and red fruit in here but also a wild minerality that pushes right to the front of the line. It delivers exotic spices, pulverized iron ore, and pencil lead in large doses, and a thick backbone with grainy, pronounced tannins that will continue to soften for years to come.

What else can we say? If you fancy yourself a Cab collecting hotshot, you really should have some of this in your cellar. If you don’t have a cellar, this is a wine worth starting one for!

95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Medium to deep ruby, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is made up of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec. The nose features licorice, dried leaves, cedar, vanilla pod and iron aromas with mint chocolate, cumin, cardamom, coffee bean and a core of red and black fruits—so many layers and exotic spice notes! Medium to full-bodied, it explodes with luscious fruits, chocolate, and spice accents, framed by very ripe, grainy tannins and great freshness and finishing long and layered. Yes! Drink 2022-2040.”

93 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“David Ramey is one of the few producers in California that excels with all of the main varieties. The wines are generally rich and luscious, but in recent years some of that has been dialed back. The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum is another wine in this range that really benefits from an added year in bottle. Black cherry, chocolate, mocha, leather, spice, and plum give its feeling of voluptuousness. The 100% new oak now feels much better integrated than it did a year ago. Drink 2020-2030.”

93 Points – Jeb Dunnuck

“The flagship is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Annum, another wine that plays in the more elegant, pretty end of the spectrum. Notes of cassis, kirsch, cedary spice, and earth all flow to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, balanced Cabernet that has polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Give bottles a year or two and it’s going to keep for 15+ years. Drink 2021-2036.”

93 Points – Wine Spectator

“Ripe and suave in feel, with waves of red currant, cherry and plum preserves gliding through, laced with subtle savory, cedar and floral hints, providing lift through the stylish finish. A minerally echo adds range. Distinctive. Best from 2021 through 2032.”

93 Points – Wine Enthusiast

“This blends in a healthy 17% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec, the grapes from several of the valley’s appellations, including Oakville and Mount Veeder. In total, the wine is intense in power and tightly wound grip, with textured layers of tar, cocoa powder, and black currant. It has years to go in bottle. Enjoy 2025-2030.”
