Mission Codename Build me up buttercup
Good morning to everyone, except less so for those who want their Chardonnay light, crisp, steely, or “Chablis-esque.”
This ain’t it.
However, for anyone who likes their Cakebreads, Rombauers, Newton Unfiltereds – you should be all over this one. 93 POINTS. HALF off, too!
One of our all-time favorites - Marimar returns in full form.
As Wine Spectator says, “Catalonia to California: Marimar Torres cultivates her own wine legacy in Sonoma.” This small winery is led by a true renaissance lady - born in Spain as an heiress to the Torres wine legacy, she speaks six languages, has degrees in enology, and leads the charge in making some truly fantastic wines for her eponymous estate.
Her strength pairs nicely with the deep talent and knowledge of winemaker Bill Dyer, an OG who came to Napa in 1976. He developed Sterling Vineyard’s single-vineyard program, and helped with Sodaro Estate, Frog’s Leap Winery, among others. Today he makes his own wine and continues consulting closely with Marimar on their adventures. Don Miguel Vineyard sits in a cooler, foggy part of Russian River Valley and supplies fruit to a small group of elite producers - Hartford Family and Dutton-Goldfield being two of them.
Fleshy and medium-bodied, it has weight and richness, and yes, it’s movie popcorn buttery but not over the top. It serves up loads of tropical fruit, with pineapple and ripe pear, lemon curd, lime, green apple, white flowers, almond paste, and sweet corn, all over the nose and palate. Long, weighty and balanced with just enough acidity, it’s worthy of langoustine tails tossed in a Cajun-spiced creamy pasta.
Comparable Chardonnay from peers like Ramey, DuMol, Hartford Court run 2-3x the price. If you bought their 2017 that we sold a year ago, you know what to expect. Only this one is even better.
93 Points – James Suckling
“Aromas of bell peppers, grapefruit, brown butter, and sage. Medium-to full-bodied with good precision. Clean, linear, and refined. Drink now. Sustainable.”
