Mission Codename Oldie goldie

“A damn fine Sauternes.” - Robert Parker

And sometimes all you need is a Sauternes. Decadent, well-aged, pristine, direct from the Château…

The ultimate liquid gold. From a next-door neighbor of Château d’Yquem! In the 2007 vintage, both rated the same 19/20 points by Jancis Robinson MW, and you have a choice. Yquem costs about $600 a bottle and you can buy an entire 12-pack case of this for the same money, thanks to yet another deep, peerless Wine Spies deal.

Besides the ubiquitous Château d’Yquem, this property is surrounded by other greats such as their sister property Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Guiraud, La Tour Blanche, Rayne-Vigneau, and Sigalas-Rabaud. Talk about a liquid gold zip code.

Jancis Robinson surely knows her Sauternes inside out, so when she claims that “This estate has a somewhat lower profile than Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey although the two are in fact siblings, having both been born from the division of the original Peyraguey estate. I have tasted a number of vintages at a variety of different tastings, usually when in Bordeaux or in London, but the wines are not so commonly encountered otherwise… and this is a shame, because the wine is, despite its lower profile, of very good quality.” we take notice and go FIND you some. Not much though, so act fast.

There you have it, pure botrytis, pure joy, pure bargain, it probably COST the Château 10x to make it!

19/20 Points – Jancis Robinson MW

“Mid gold. Very, very sweet. Amazingly so. Some miracle has been performed here. Very round and charming but very long too. This wine was difficult to spit! Punchy, big impact, quite neat. Certainly concentrated. Still quite chewy on the finish.”

95 Points, Editors’ Choice – Wine Enthusiast

“A beautifully ripe wine, layered with the richest fruit, the acidity offering a bright moment within the richness. Botrytis is there, like a hard core for the pillow of ripe apricots, lychees, spice and fine freshness.”

93 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The Clos Haut Peyraguey 2007 has an expressive nose with notes of clear honey, apricot, fig and a touch of walnut: very well defined and natural. The palate is quite racy and spicy with ginger inflecting the mandarin, pear, marmalade and apricot fruit. It displays superb weight and persistency towards the finish with just a faint tang of ginger lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink now-2025.”

93 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“Pale yellow-gold. Tight nose suggests orange, lime and oatmeal. Juicy, spicy and penetrating, with a very intense flavor of peach. Finishes long and powerfully aromatic.”
