Mission Codename Melrose Place
“It is the mark of a gentleman to be moderate in the use of wine.” – Athenaeus
Wise words from an ancient Greek. But hard to live by when you open this bottle. That Beckstoffer-born fruit is just TOO good for moderation. An empty bottle on our tasting table as proof. Also, the name “three revelers” refers to an ancient vase showing three men partying down on wine and we doubt they were practicing much restraint.
Also, consider the savings here. A $195 release price, and $145 for club members. From us? $69.
Did we mention single-vineyard BECKSTOFFER fruit?! Compared to pricing on other Beckstoffer Cabs that’s a whizzpopping good deal.
Beckstoffer Melrose, smack in the heart of Rutherford, is one of the smaller sites owned and farmed by the royal viticultural family of Napa Valley, lesser-known because it’s mostly planted to Sauvignon Blanc with just a few rows of Cabernet in there, delivering the goods for labels you may have heard of such as Duckhorn, Growth, Krutz Family, Newton, or Provenance.
Three Revelers is a tiny boutique label making minuscule lots, little as 2 BARRELS (50 cases, 600 bottles) for some, including this one! They bring an obsessive approach to the effort, working with top vineyards like Beckstoffer’s Melrose, and using the best T5 French barrels (used by Hartwell and Vice Versa among other top-tier wineries.)
The barrels in particular are worth mentioning. They’re expensive, around $2,000 each, made from oak trees planted for Louis XIV in the forest of Tronçais in France, which produces very fine grain wood stringent selected and air-dried for 5 years. Each barrel is made and personally signed by master cooper Meilleur Ouvrier de France. If you remember the Occasio wine we sold, they also use a few of these and refer to their “mystical qualities”.
Finally, it’s bottled in those thick, heavy glasses and dipped in wax to cap off the luxury feel.
What about the winemaker? Well, that remains under an NDA, but we have a few guesses. From what we’re told deep experience with Beckstoffer fruit is there. Take your pick of a few top names and you’ll probably hit one on the head…
The wine, though! All that fancy pants barrel and vineyard talk mean nothing if it doesn’t deliver. And it does. BIG time. All out decadence. Dark ripe cherry, mocha, cassis, and red currants mingle with graphite, crushed gravel, and fresh-turned earth. Rich, seamless, and built with sweet, polished tannins, it’s just a baby, but primed for immediate enjoyment.
That infinitesimal production means it’s super limited though. So, make your move while it’s here…
