Burgundy expert Jamie Goode profiles this precious Domaine - owned by Champagne Bollinger - and its hotshot winemaker best: “Chanson was founded in 1750, and still occupies their original home, although they added a new gravity-fed winery in Savigny-lès-Beaune in 2010. They are a Bourgogne negociant doing things the right way. They were purchased by Bollinger in 1999. I visited with celebrated winemaker Jean-Pierre Confuron. ‘I don’t like the term negociant,’ he says because his view is that they behave like a Domaine… ‘My job is to respect the originality of each territory,’ says Confuron… I was impressed by these wines.”
Next up, RED Pernand 1er Cru! Did you know that every town in Burgundy got to affix their TOP vineyard to their name in Napoleonic times? So, what’s once Pernand became Pernand-Vergelesses, what’s once Gevrey became Gevrey-Chambertin, and so forth… Like in Nuits-Saint Georges (yes, you guessed it, where the best vineyard is Les Saint Georges) there are no Grand Crus in Pernand-Vergelesses, but if there ever was a vineyard worthy of being elevated so, it’s Les Vergelesses.
Did we say it’s the #1 vineyard of the town - a 1er Cru UNDER 50 bucks?! - go ahead, back the truck up. But do it fast as this too was a small lot…
92 Points – James Suckling
“A finely textured 2018 with blackberry, blueberry and strawberry aromas. Some chocolate and walnut, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a chocolatey finish. Drink or hold.”
91 Points – Wine Spectator
“This red is all about the lush black cherry, black currant and violet flavors draped over the velvety texture. Sandalwood and spice elements, along with a hint of dark chocolate, join in and linger on the aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2033. 44 cases imported.”
