Mission Codename CellarStocker#7
Seventh wine? More like seventh heaven! Our first Outpost EVER.
Oh boy, we’re in trouble. This wine has never been offered at this low a price, please forgive us. Better to ask forgiveness than permission, right?
Howell by Thomas Rivers Brown!
Outpost rules the roost on Howell Mountain. Made by the one and only TRB, these wines have been among the most wanted from this prestigious AVA for good reason. Always high scoring (a pair of mid-90s for this) and
Just six months ago Wine Spectator wrote “The Cabernets here are clearly mountain in profile - intensely colored, vividly fruited and marked by chiseled, defined structure. But while neighbors such as Dunn next door and Robert Craig just down the road are known for their burlier tannic profiles, Outpost’s wines show a higher pitch and racier edge. That house style comes from the hand of Brown…”
As with most TRB Cabs, this comes front-loaded with a stack of chewy, teeth-staining fruit, but also delivers exceptional minerality and a multi-dimensional blend of incense, 85% dark chocolate, forest floor, loam, and tobacco leaf hint at a future evolution to come. Still a bit primary, but this young pup has the stuffing to last for many moons and will surely evolve into a mature heavyweight brawler. But a double decant will help this youngster shake and bake its way to a victory lap if you need to enjoy it right now.
Just a few cases! And almost forgot to add we have a tiny bit of the 2018 too, here at the Store!
94-96+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Sporting a deep purple-black color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little coaxing to begin, soon unfurling to reveal notions of crushed black cherries, wild blueberries and fresh blackcurrant, plus suggestions of tar, wet slate, fertile loam and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with wonderful energy, delivering loads of black fruit layers and a firm, grainy frame plus and lively backbone, finishing long and mineral laced. (Tasted as a barrel sample.)”
95 Points – James Suckling
“Wonderful spices with pine needles and dark fruit. Full-bodied and silky with fine-grained tannins and beautiful length. Attractive vanilla undertones, but not overstated. Compact and creamy. Tight at the end. Needs two or three years to open. Try after 2025, but already attractive.”
