Mission Codename Franc 'n Horse
We tried to warn you! The Petit Verdot FLEW out of here in record time.
Not surprising. It had all the right stuff and those who scored some will be very happy.
But guess what?
We have another similarly compelling big red from them.
This time it’s CAB FRANC! 93 POINTS from Wine Enthusiast, once again under $30, and another never-before-seen varietal in the masterful hands of Hawk and Horse.
About those hands… By now you may know about their winemaker, Dr. Richard Peterson. Haven’t heard of him? You’ve surely heard of Screaming Eagle and Heidi Peterson Barrett. Get this - before Heidi, it was her dad, Dr. Peterson who led the first four vintages of Screaming Eagle into cult stardom.
This stuff doesn’t tread lightly either. A full-tilt display of richness reminds us of blueberry pie, raspberry danish, Nilla wafers, and cocoa nibs all melted down into some outrageously tasty concoction. Ripe and toasty, it delivers a howitzer blast straight into your flavor muzzle. A good thing if you’re into that kind of wine. Still, you will be better off diluting it with your favorite fatty protein feast.
Same as before, we have less than normal. And like before, if you can score some, you’ll be happy you did.
93 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“Opulent vanilla and milk-chocolate aromas lead to a firm, moderately tannic palate and concentrated blueberry and dark chocolate flavors in this full-bodied wine. Delicious now, it should be even more complex after 2024.”
