Mission Codename What you SIMI what you get
We love a good Alexander Valley Cabernet, and few do it better than SIMI.
SIMI turned loose their first vintage some 145 years ago. Today they’re still crushing grapes and pumping out fantastic wines, often at great prices.
This 93-pointer Cab is a testament to that fact. And at $50-55, this represents a clear value proposition in a sea of much more expensive wines. But wind down another 45% to an irresistible $30 and its possibly the best Alexander Valley Cab value around.
For 70 years Zelma Long paved the way for SIMI to become one of the most respected wineries in Sonoma. They also have a deep commitment to elevating women in the wine business.
When asked “what is your proudest achievement?” Long’s response was “hiring and mentoring and encouraging young women. Many early women winemakers had worked for me. Diane Kenworthy, who worked with me at SIMI as a viticulturist, became the first woman president of the American Society for Enology & Viticulture. Dawnine Dyer became the long-term winemaker at Domaine Chandon. Geneviève Janssens became the first winemaker of Opus One. And so on…” Such legacy!
Though dominated by 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, this includes a smattering of other varietals, blended masterfully to perfection. It’s fruit-forward in style, with elegance and balance to spare. It comes straight down the middle with red plums, cassis, cocoa powder, and baking spices. Some nuanced laurel, graphite, and toasty oak mixed in there too. Wraps it all up like Beef Wellington, so plush and decadent on the finish, with which by the way, it would SING with any given night of the week.
Robert Parker once described this very accurately as “classic Cabernet that balances power and richness with elegance and finesse… belongs in the cellar of any California Cabernet admirer.”
Normally, its competitors are Silver Oak, Jordan, or Stonestreet but those run 2-3x more versus what we have it here for.

93 Points – The Tasting Panel
“Smooth and lush, with bright notes of plum and berry. Tangy, ripe, and tannic; balanced and complex, with a rich, persistent finish. Dark, rich, deep, intensely flavored Cabernet from a respected producer.”
