Mission Codename Rebel with a cause

Once again, we’re buzzing around the office like kids on pixy sticks, because, well, GAJA.

But hold up, the beat hasn’t even dropped yet. Ready for it? OUR PRICE. GAJA FOR $45?!

My hands tremble as I write this. Where to even begin?

How about what Robert Parker said: “Angelo Gaja’s works of art are worth every cent they will fetch…” or, or how brilliantly Antonio Galloni sums up what the fuss is all about: “Driven by an unrelenting quest for perfection, GAJA took his family’s estate to the top… Getting to the top in any field is hard. Staying at the top is even harder. For all of the praise, Angelo GAJA and his family have received over the years, they have earned and deserve every bit of it.”

The Piemontese visionary is known far and wide as one of the best in Italy, if not the world.

Sito Moreso is essentially a Super-Piemontese, a genre invented by none other than Mr. GAJA himself, as historically compromising the noble purity of Nebbiolo in these parts was an unfathomable sacrilege. He not only experimented with such blends that incorporated French varietals but also perfected them too, making them ‘bigger’ than the appellations they hailed from, such as Barolo or Barbaresco.

This brilliant and creative blend with equal parts of Nebbiolo and Barbera along with 30% Merlot to this date remains unique to the GAJA portfolio of exceptional wines. It hails from a couple of limestone-rich sites in the Langhe. The Merlot and Barbera hail from Treiso in Cuneo and the Nebbiolo from a vineyard GAJA purchased from the Moresco family, the namesake for this wine as a tribute to its heritage.

It’s energetic in personality, with red cherries, red plums, a gentle sprinkling of spices, anise, subtle floral notes, and bristling acidity. There’s a haunting balance between the three varietals, an ebb and flow if you will, that adjoins the telltale firm Nebbiolo tannins with the juicy Barbera acidity and the plush Merlot fruit. It’s got that ephemeral, magic winemaking touch that only names like GAJA can achieve no matter what the blend is.

Sito Moresco massively over-delivers – especially at a price you likely never see ANY GAJA at again.

93 Points – Natalie MacLean

“From Angelo Gaja, Sito Moresco 2019 is an elegant, beautifully crafted and structured red wine blend of Nebbiolo, Cabernet and Merlot grapes from the Langhe, Piedmont wine region. Full and flavourful on the palate with rose petals, red berry, cassis, plum, savoury herbs finishing long with a kiss of smoke. Pour with an equally juicy roast of pork. Drink or hold. A good cellaring candidate for 5-plus years.”
