My AVA (Autonomic Vinous Arousal) System is PINGING with excitement here! What I’m trying to say is, this Cabernet Sauvignon is gorg and you need to take it for a ride. If you can get some. Because there’s FAR less of this than we’d like…BUT if you miss this one, fear not because we have two more of the same wine, from different vintages.
Wine Advocate called this inaugural vintage a solid 93 points - not bad for the first shot, huh? Gordenker comes to us from Moon Mountain, one of the newer AVAs in the Mayacama Mountain Range and known for its higher elevation and red volcanic soils. They share ground with some epic producers; the legendary Monte Rosso Vineyard sits nearby, and is just one of the things that makes this wine sing.
The husband and wife team, Michelle and Tom Gendall, have experience from around the world with names like Sojourn Cellars, Bryant Family Vineyard, Pegasus Bay, Weingut Keller, and Keplinger* on their collective resume. Currently, Tom leads the charge as winemaker of the legendary **Cline Vineyards. The vineyard has been in Michelle’s family for generations and previously managed by esteemed viticulturist Phil Coturri so you know those vines have been well loved.
2012 was the first year the couple picked fruit for their own project and I’d say they hit the first pitch out of the park! And if you recall, 2012 remains one of the strongest vintages in the last 10+ years, with wines still youthful and exuberant 11 years later.
The wine itself is true to Moon Mountain style, rustic and structured, with a deep core of blue and black fruit. Think aromas of ripe berries and luscious savory herbs. It seduces your taste buds with lush extracted flavors of mocha, blueberry pie, sandalwood, dried lavender all delivered with velvety tannin. Still incredibly youthful, the fruit remains primary with just the slightest hints of tertiary notes coming into focus.
Very little was made and we could only get our hands on a few cases. Make your move!
93 points - Wine Advocate “Deep garnet colored, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Sylvia Drive is profoundly scented of blueberry pie, crème de cassis, mocha, sandalwood, cigar box and spice cake with hints of dried lavender and licorice. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and finely structured with evolved, velvety tannins and seamless freshness supporting the complex, matured fruit. It finishes long and layered. Drink 2017-2028.”
