Mission Codename First rain
“Powerful but lithe wines made by Duncan Meyers, of Arnot-Roberts.” – Vinous
I’m not much of a name dropper but, um… but when you’ve also got Steve Matthiasson (Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Spottswoode, and like half of the cult wine club) along with Lee Martinelli, Jr. (yes, THAT Martinelli) also involved in a wine… NBD, whatevs, we’re staying cool.
We’re cool. Not freaking out at all. Ok, maybe we’re fangirling a little. No, a lot.
I mean, proprietors Jim and Margaret Foley put together the dream team here and we have it for an absurd price!
A massive 74% off a $95 Sonoma Red Blend?!?
A wine the Los Angeles Times called “stunning”?!
I’m so in. You should be too. Sometimes it’s good to be a follower, right?
The word Petrichor defines that intoxicating smell that arises from damp earth after the rain. Petrichor, the vineyard, is a slice of heaven in the heart of Sonoma County. Proprietors Jim and Margaret chose to start a winery to express their dedication to terroir-driven wines, and the word Petrichor embodied the whole vibe. They expect you to get hit with the eloquent expression of their vineyard atop Redwood Hill, and remember it time and time again.
This epic team crafted a blend for 2011 like a symphony in your mouth. Even Master Sommelier Yoon Ha called it “perhaps the most compelling new world Syrah of 2011.”
The blend brings together about 2/3 Syrah with 1/3 Grenache, both aged in neutral oak. It’s elegant and contoured, clearly made by true industry veterans, from dirt to bottle. Think layered dried cherry, spice notes, and enticing acidity, all in concert with perfectly tanned leather, broody blackberries, and bright violet flowers. This wine has the heart of an Old World wine coming out of a New World body.
It’s a passion project so minute that only a couple of raving reviews exist on past vintages by Antonio Galloni’s Vinous and spot on nonetheless with “sexy, floral-accented aromas of candied dark berries, olive, potpourri, and cracked pepper… superb clarity, floral and spice-dominated persistence…”
And for 25 bucks a bottle, you better stop reading this ‘cause it won’t last!
