Damilano, a Piedmont institution since 1890, has lately been on the up and up per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “It’s great to see Damilano gradually moving to a style that gives more importance to terroir than winemaking. Damilano is one of the most important and visible families in Barolo, with a collection of top-notch parcels that is enviable. With those holdings, however, comes a responsibility to make wines that respect the quality and qualities of those sites.”
Cannubi by Damilano, therefore, is the crème de la crème without a doubt. At this best price in the world and with mighty fine scores to back, no Italian wine lover should be without it.
Fair warning though, should you choose to open one of these this year or next, promise us to allow it at least a few hours of breathing before the first whiff and sip. In just an hour after we popped and poured it had morphed into an otherworldly elixir, impossible to recognize this veiled beauty, first hiding behind a wall of impenetrable tannins. With some air it spills forth with enchanting red fruit, dried cherries and just-ripe strawberries, orange peel and pekoe tea, figs, Asian spices and exotic woods. The more you wait, the better it will get. Exotic, floral, and monumental, this is a Barolo that clearly shows the potential to age to perfection one day.
Oh, and take note that you bought it at nearly half off today, cause in just a decade or so we know that it will quadruplicate in value as a fine collectible. Cannubi does just that.
