With 95 points Wine Advocate, and 94 from Jeb Dunnuck, it carries huge praise. What else do you expect from Don Burns? After all, he is the guiding force behind Turtle Rock’s meteoric rise into 100-point, mailing-list-only, perpetually-sold-out stardom…

But this wine is attainable. For anyone. Because the price…make that our price? It’s not huge.

Under $40 gets you a Paso red that rivals or exceeds many of the best from the region. And surely CRUSHES everything even remotely near our price.

It all makes sense because the winemaker - yea the same guy who owns and makes Turtle Rock. For those of you who are not familiar, Turtle Rock quickly skyrocketed into 100-pointers “cult” status in recent years with a growing waiting list… while Jeb Dunnuck reports that “it may be too late to get on the mailing list, but Don Burns’ Turtle Rock is unquestionably one of California’s new superstars.”

Burns helps make 100-pointers at Saxum too. He also makes 13th & Third and that’s IT.

What Vinous says: “Given Burns’ lineage it will come as no surprise that his wines are extroverted and fruit-driven, with serious depth…” And this big, brooding, juicy red sucks you in like a Cocomelon episode. I’m helpless! Give me a sippy cup of this at the park, the movies, the ballgame, for breakfast - doesn’t matter - and send my taste buds into hyperstimulation mode. Drowning in cherry cordial, strawberry reduction, and red/black licorice all twisted together and melted down. There’s a hefty dose of oak, but it doesn’t feel heavy or out of wack. Don’t even try taking the bottle away unless you want a full-blown meltdown. Better buy enough to share, because you will want to hoard it for yourself.

“The 2019 NMR is a blend of 52% Grenache, 24% Syrah and 24% Mourvèdre from the G2 Vineyard and Adelaida Vineyard, matured for 22 months in 50% new French oak. Medium ruby-purple, its aromas are reticent yet deep, slowly unfolding to blackberry and blueberry jam, dried herbs, forest floor and touches of cracked pepper. The full-bodied palate’s concentrated fruits are supported by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, and it finishes with notable freshness and spice. Drink 2023-2033.”

“The 2019 NMR is on another level and well worth seeking out. It’s mostly Grenache but includes 52% Grenache, 24% Syrah, and 24% Mourvèdre. This deep purple-hued effort offers a big, rich, powerful, and full-bodied style as well as notes of darker currants, chocolate, leather, and some peppery herbs. Fermented with 30% whole clusters, it has low acidity and a fleshy, opulent style best drunk over the coming 4-6 years or so. It’s a pleasure bomb. This comes primarily from the G2 Vineyard and was 70% destemmed and brought up in 50% new oak. Drink 2022-2028.”
