The d’Ambrosio family has long grown grapes in Napa and sold to many of the top producers in the area. You’ve probably drank their grapes without knowing it in many a premier Napa blend. They have a massive 70 acres of prime fruit to choose from and this gets the best of the best. When they decided to make their own, they brought winemaker Tom Foster on board. Given his deep experience at Opus One, Groth & Lewis Cellars it’s no wonder he knocked it out of the park.
This is a non-vintage production, with a fascinating story. They had a few reserve barrels leftover from 2016 and 2017. Still drinking prime, they didn’t want them to go to waste. By the time the 2018 vintage rolled around (a fantastic one, btw), they decided to blend them all together. The 2018 represents 83%, with the balance coming from the previous two. Rules dictate at least 95% for declaring the vintage on a label, thus - no vintage on the label.
But now that you know what’s inside, what’s it tastes like?
Cherry pie, for starters! And some blackberry, plum jam, and spice cake. An intriguing touch of tobacco leaf carries into the long finish. A lovely, soft and expansive texture, too. Truly SO MUCH WINE for the money, making it an ideal companion to elevate the best smashburgers you can flip.
Jeb Dunnuck had wonderful things to say about a previous version of this wine: “solid depth of fruit as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, ripe tannins, and a solid finish. This is a big, rich, chewy effort to enjoy over the coming decade.”
Sieze the day and make it yours - these never last!
