Mission Codename In Vino Trinitas
“As rich as it gets…”
Pulled that straight from the Trinitas website, friends. You know we live and breathe (and drink) Napa Cabernet on the regular. The samples never stop, so we must be uber-picky.
And THIS one put us on our heels.
Firstly, it’s a BIG boy. “Dense but suave” as the 94-point review says. This blows other $100 Napa cabs clear out of the water. Single vineyard, too? 100-point winemaker you say?
And then we saw the price…. $85 at the winery, but over 50% OFF for you. If you fancy a proper Napa Cab, we compel you to get as much as you can.
But HOW is it so good? So polished? Ah, young padawan, the answer is KALE.
Not the crunchy green. The winemaker. You probably don’t know Kale Anderson, but you should. And you will. The Sonoma native broke ground first at Colgin then added Terra Valentine, Cliff Lede Vineyards and Pahlmeyer to the resume. He was one of the youngest winemakers EVER to earn 100 points from Robert Parker for the 2013 Pahlmeyer - which also happened to be the first perfect score awarded to Pahlmeyer in their 30-year history.
We tasted his wines at a small event over a year ago and were FLOORED. They were polished, expansive, lusciously textured and stacked with all manner of fruit and complexity.
Which brings us back to that first line. “Rich as it gets” is exactly what you get here. INKY and heady, just SWELLING with boysenberry jam, raspberry coulis, crushed violets, Tahitian vanilla, freshly cracked black peppercorns, some mocha and toasty oak. It’s EVERYTHING you want and hope for in a really nice (and often very expensive) Napa Cab. 10/10 would drink with fervor any night of the week - preferably with some grilled tri-tip.
We’re fighting every urge not to buy more for ourselves really. Treat yourself while it’s here. You’ll be awestruck at the first sip. By the time that first bottle is gone you’ll be hitting us up with that “hey, uh… any more of that Trinitas” message.
Not likely!
94 Points – James Suckling
“A brooding, complex nose of cigar box, hot stones, spices, ash, tobacco, mulberries, violet extract and lots of smoke. The palate is dense but suave with plush tannins, an intermingling line of acidity and a long, chewy finish. Wonderful Coombsville character.”
