When father-son team, Gerry and Paul McSharry got together with rockstar winemaker Mark Herold to start a world-class winery, they obviously decided to work with a few small wineries in this premiere location. Paul Hobbs, REWA, Silverado, Stagecoach, Faust, Farella, Maroon, Mark Herold - Wondering the neighborhood of Coombsville is like strolling up and down the sidewalks of Bel-Air or the Upper East Side. Top quality neighbors and, I can only imagine, TOP quality house parties.

They have kept outstanding relationships with these vineyards over the years, and now with consulting winemaker Mike Hirby of Relic fame at the helm they consistently put up big scores with “intricate and complex” wines.

Always dark, extracted, and extroverted in style, and every vintage racks up huge scores. Maze’s flagship CLEW can only be described as brilliant! As Napa Valley’s coolest corner, Coombsville is known for producing wines that are vibrant, well-structured, and fruit-forward, and CLEW is no exception. Lush red fruits and spicy herb notes are expertly married into velvety tannins and exquisite minerality. Deep blackcurrant, black cherry, raw vanilla bean, and nuances of cedar swell in the glass. Hedonistic yet polished, and absolutely stunning from all angles!

“There are 190 cases of the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon CLEW, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon blended from the Rocca Collinetta and Bennett Vineyards in Coombsville. Hints of camphor and creosote accent cassis and blackberry fruit, giving this dark-fruited wine a savory cast. Full-bodied and supple, it’s nevertheless reasonably tannic and would benefit from a few years of time in the cellar. Drink 2024-2040.”
