Mission Codename Que Syrah!
“As fine a group of releases as I have yet tried from Wrath.” - Vinous
And no wonder Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called this “seamlessly fresh” and dealt a hefty 95 point rating!
For $27 you will be hard pressed to find a more immensely spellbinding wine. It’s inky, aromatic, juicy, and spicy. This is the cheap, refreshing vinous lubrication to bring your weary, Cabernet-laden souls back to life.
For a decade prior to her winemaking career, Wrath’s Sabrine Rodems held a crucial backstage role at the San Francisco Opera. She then went to a master’s degree from UC Davis. Wrath’s proprietor Michael Thomas has also been an established archeologist for two decades. With that kind of team, art, and science meld into a perfect balance in wines that scream quality and sense of place.
And they are doing great things from their little outpost in the Central Coast. Local newspaper The Salinas Californian captures Wrath the best: “A small operation that has received large accolades for its vintages, Wrath is a winemaker’s winery. Rodems loves the work because Thomas likes to experiment. With such words as ‘opulent,’ ‘gorgeous,’ and ‘lush’ used by wine critics to describe Wrath wines, the operation is definitely on the right path.”
Could not have said it better, sure is “opulent, gorgeous and lush”
The color strikes you first - candy apple red with swirls of purple and crimson at the edge. Then the aromatics hit you with red and black-fruits on the nose; cherries, raspberries, and currants unite with spice and earth undertones. A cornucopia of black plum, and mission figs, toasted Telicherry pepper, black tea leaf, leather, smoked meats and minerals flood the taste buds. Soft and flowy in the mouth, it’s instantly loveable while deeply intellectual and complex.
Sounds heavenly so the only thing left to add is: pile up! With a devout following out there for Wrath, this one will go fast.
95 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2018 Syrah San Saba Vineyard was vinified with 30% whole clusters and matured in 50% new French oak for 10 months. It has a medium ruby color and alluring scents of red and black cherries, peppercorn, woodsmoke, aniseed and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is grainy and seamlessly fresh with a core of spicy fruit and a long, layered finish. 391 cases were made.”
