Mission Codename Red Alert
OH YES! A knockout value from Red Mountain AVA has just entered your life.
Washington’s Red Mountain AVA is pumping out some blockbuster Cabs. And some great values when compared to places like Napa - although most still hit $50-75. This one is sourced from the iconic Shaw and Quintessence vineyards and punches WAY above its weight. Under $25 for this level of quality is simply unreal.
Foundation Cellars is a super small ultra-boutique project started about ten years ago. Erik Zentler needed to explore his creative side and paired up with a rockstar winemaker in his own right - Darby English, of Darby Cellars who also worked at some of the rockstar Washington wineries including Mark Ryan, Stevens Winery and Betz Family.
Two years in 50% new French Oak. Another two years in bottle. Then released into the wild. And by wild we mean the winery and a few very lucky purveyors of fine wine. The vast majority is consumed by the wine club members and visitors - understandable with only 148 cases were made!
Don’t ask how we came across it - we’re lucky to have ANY. Just get some!
Ripe and forward, it’s flowing with crowd-pleasing goodness. Deep red fruits, some of mom’s fresh-out-the-oven mixed berry pie, spices and all, a dusting of chai and some mocha. Seriously well-made stuff, fleshy and forward, smooth approachable tannins, HEAPS of fruit… The mouthfeel and seamless front to back composition has what you want in a $50+ cab - for less than half the price! Think of it like the daily drinker version of an Andrew Will, Quicelda Creek, etc. Not hyper-pricey or cult status, and still delivers big time.
Really very little of this one to go around. Cabernet value hunters need to get it while it’s here!
