Mission Codename Mendo a go go
We’ve been drinking these wines with reckless abandon for years, yet every single time a new one comes around we’re still stunned at the value. We actually double dog dare you to find a better value Cab blend out there. NINETEEN dollars!? $45 upon release and now roughly 45% OFF??
How do they do it??
It helps when you’re practically off the grid way up in Mendocino. If it had “Napa” on the label, no doubt the price would be drastically higher.
Winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner is the real deal. He has the chops; from his early start working with the famed Chapoutier. Next, he shadowed the great Paul Hobbs for several years. Today he sustainably farms a 15-acre estate vineyard perched at 1,400 feet elevation, on the southern edge of Mendocino, right above Alexander Valley. A true “one with the land” property, letting the remainder of their 150-acre estate run feral with rattlesnakes, wild turkeys, and other critters.
Medium to full-bodied, and just dripping with deep red and black fruits. Black cherries, red currants, juicy raspberry jam, and sweet baking spices too. It has the intensity and seriousness you crave but don’t usually find in a sub $30 bottle. Maybe thrice that if from Rutherford as it carries a similarly dusty finish? This, is the crowd-pleasing, open any day of the week, cellar defending, a locker-stocker deal you’ve been looking for.
Reckless abandon we say.
