Mission Codename Cut like a razor blade
“Alphonse Mellot junior, 19th generation of the flagship Domaine in Sancerre, has 53 biodynamically farmed hectares of vines and offers a range of remarkably clear, elegant and polished single vineyard Sancerres like Edmond, outstanding in terms of their concentration, precision and expression.” - Wine Advocate
95 points from Enthusiast! A sparkling jewel from the Loire with crackling intensity and unmatched style! And today, it’s yours for an unmatched price…
I’m just going to say it. Cliché or even farfetched as it may be, this is the Montrachet of the Loire!
Here’s why. Edmond is one of a handful of wines that define Sauvignon Blanc. Period. It’s the flagship bottling of a Domaine that goes back 19 generations and five centuries. Just last year it was named one of “The World’s Best Sauvignon Blancs” by Wine-Searcher, pointing out that “Named after his father, the Edmond Sancerre is described as brilliant and rich, but still possessing a refreshing crispness… it’s among one of the most affordable wines on this list too.”
Affordable at $95, originally, daylight robbery at $53.
The story, per Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate goes: “Alphonse Mellot was founded in 1513 and is now run by the 19th generation of the family. The winery sits pretty in the center of the village with an extensive network of cellars. With 56 hectares of vineyard, Mellot produces top-drawer, old vine cuvées like Cuvée Edmond, which sources its fruit from a 6-ha plot of old vines within the 38-ha La Moussière vineyard. The resulting style, fermented in differing sizes of wooden tanks, is pure and precise and manages to retain mouth-watering acidity even in warm vintages like 2018.”
Hear that? Pure and precise - baby! And with mouth-watering acidity too? Drooling as I type, that’s exactly how we like our Sancerre around here. It would cost you a small fortunate (and a couple of broken industrial strength blenders) to make rock juice. Instead, you got this monument to minerality. Add to that, layers of almost every citrus and stone fruit grown on earth, a bouquet of spring blossoms, and a laser-focused finish that lingers as long as it will take to brown those scallops on both sides? Oof.
Trouble is, SEVERE SCARCITY. You know the drill…
95 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“Now mature, this wine balances crisp citrus with warm apricot flavors. It is smooth and intense, with a texture that merges gracefully into the ripe fruits. The wine is ready to drink now. Organic and biodynamic.”
