Mission Codename More or less

Well, we knew the ‘Grand Vin’ - THE Clos Apalta would not last long. That’s why we lined a couple of other surprises up from the Lapostolle family. Including the second-to-none Le Petit Clos.

As James Suckling says, “there’s no doubt that Clos Apalta is one of the world’s greatest red wines.”

Clos Apalta being a former winner of Wine Spectator’s #1 Wine of the Year award emphasizes that “the wine’s price has remained relatively modest through the years, considering the investment behind it, particularly so in comparison to prices for benchmark wines from regions such as Bordeaux, Napa, and Tuscany” makes Le Petit Clos the top bargain of the Southern Hemisphere? Maybe beyond?

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous echoes that “Clos Apalta is the jewel in the crown of the Bournet family, who also own Lapostolle. From a winery hewn into the granite rock of Apalta and with winemaking overseen by the renowned oenologist Michel Rolland, they make only two wines, both in the Bordelais style: Clos Apalta and Le Petit Clos, two Carménère-based blends.”

Thanks to the best deal you can get on this extreme collectible anywhere. And what did we think of it? Definitely a chip of the old block, the perfect one to visit often while the big boy sleeps in your stash for that special occasion. At this price, there is not much to think of.

Not much allocated on this one either, so when this is gone, we have one last hat trick for ya.

Again, let the reviews do the talking…

95 Points – James Suckling

“Aromatic and herbal nose of thyme, bay leaves, currants, blackberries, licorice and pomelo pith. Medium-bodied with a fleshy, delicious and open palate. Ripe tannins. Plush and caressing finish.”

94 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“The 2019 Le Petit Clos from Apalta, Colchagua, was aged for eight months in new French oak barrels, and then 14 months half new and half second used ones. Dark purple in the glass. It delivers an intricate nose of gentle pyrazine aromas such as jalapeno as well as blackberry, blueberry and other dark fruit over a mild, well-integrated bed of oak. In the mouth, it’s vigorous with a rich, expansive flow while the woof provides heft and underlines the jammy flavors. An elegant red from an excellent year.”
