Mission Codename Courneauring the market

“The Margaux appellation delivered an exceptional array of quality wines in 2020 with the best displaying soaring aromatics and sensuous textures.”

Margaux Under $40? With 95 Points?! Get the bleep outa here!

Gather up quietly Ops. We don’t want the competition (are they really out there anymore?) to get too jelly. After all, we did get to this first and cornered the market as a Wine Spies Exclusive.

We’ve been actively proclaiming the greatness of this vintage to anyone who will listen. And we aren’t alone.

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous recently confirms that “2020 is an incredibly exciting vintage for Bordeaux. After having tasted more than 800 wines for this report, my conclusion is that 2020 is by far the most consistent of the three vintages in Bordeaux’s so-called trilogy spanning 2018 through 2020. It is a year brimming with phenomenal wines at all levels, from the big names down to bottles the average consumer can still afford to purchase by the case… and Margaux is another sweet spot in 2020. If that sounds like a theme, that’s because it is.”

The property is a mere 5-minute drive northwest of Château Margaux in the Cantenac sector where Classified Growths abound and go for A LOT more than this humble little discovery. It’s also unusual in having Cabernet Sauvignon at its core, making up 2/3 of the blend, and giving the resultant wine black fruits galore, depth, structure, and longevity, with 1/3 bringing in the plush texture, a bright lift, along with vivid red fruit layers.

What’s in the glass is bursting with aromas of cherries, blackberries, violets, and spices, framed by a lavish application of creamy oak. Medium-bodied, ample, and enveloping, it’s fleshy and sensual, with a deep and layered core of red and black fruits underpinned by succulent acids and sweet, powdery tannins on the long and smooth finish.

Extraordinary terroir, at an unreal price. What else can we say, but rhyme it up, this Margaux’s gonna GO.

DO NOT MISS!

95 Points – Decanter World Wine Awards

“A ripe and juicy wine that comes from a 37-acre estate in the north of the Margaux appellation, it is full of still young tannins with acidity that gives the wine freshness. It all needs to soften into the rich texture that will develop as it matures. Drink from 2026.”
