Mission Codename Cape Lucky Break
Both the 2020 and 2021 The White Lady Chardonnays are now Sold Out!
To thank you for the love of South Africa, we have one more to complete Warwick’s WHITE FRIDAY.
In a land where the red Bordeaux varietals excel, so does Sauvignon Blanc of course. This one will shame many Graves and Pessac-Leognans, especially with the UNDER $20 deal we brought it to you with.
Warwick Estate has been making wines for nearly 200 years, and this comes from a few prime plots in the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch Ward, one of the premier sub-regions in Stellenbosch. A “ward” is basically a unique plot of land with vineyards that set it apart. Similar to a Cru in Burgundy, for example.
And Vinous Stephen Tanzer has the backstory: “This beautiful estate, which has a high profile for eno-tourism thanks to its restaurant, wine bar and spacious picnic grounds, continues to update itself. Managing director Mike Ratcliffe, whose mother Norma was one of South Africa’s first important female winemakers and is widely referred to as The First Lady of South African wine, hired Nic Van Aarde, who formerly made wine for Mulderbosch, and it’s no coincidence that the white wines here have gained in precision and verve since… Ratcliffe is also managing partner at Vilafonté, the project he founded with American winemaker Zelma Long and her wine-growing partner Dr. Phil Freese.”
As Jancis Robinson pointed on for Financial Times just a few months ago “There really is dynamism in Cape cellars and vineyards, and everyone is agreed on the headline trends: much more specialization in what’s suitable for the site, rather than trying to produce everything; more single-vineyard wines and greater emphasis on the different characters of subdistricts such as those of Stellenbosch…”
Big flavor Sauvignon Blanc, big discount again of course, go nuts! Oh, and you say ‘only’ 90 points?! We ask: Really James? It drinks far better than that! Trust us, take the leap of faith to the Cape, you’ll be back for more, but it will be long gone.
90 Points – James Suckling
“This shows lively and bright character with lemon drops, honeysuckle, pear skins and linden. Medium-bodied with crisp and focused acidity and vibrant citrus fruit on offer. Flavorful finish. Drink now.”
