Mission Codename Sneak Attack!

Is this the best, ultra-hip, gotta-have-it, endless Summer white deal in Wine Spies history?

$16 hooks your tastebuds up with a seriously hip and sensationally yummy white with DOUBLE the 92 point scores.

But… Godello, you say?

Eric Asimov of The New York Times described Godello as “white Bordeaux on steroids” and “California Chardonnay without the nonsense” if you need some more coaxing. It’s a “sneaky intense” wine brimming with mouthwatering “pear, mango, and sea salt” as Wine Spectator wrote in their review. It’s the ultimate ABC (anything but Chardonnay) varietal from the rugged, oceanside windswept hillsides of Galicia.

It’s also a sneaky good value at our price.

Have an open mind, take a flyer on a few, and we PROMISE your only regret will be you didn’t get more.

Valdeorras is a high valley at 1,000+ feet elevation that’s just north of the Portuguese border in that Atlantic-influenced northwestern corner of Spain’s Iberian Peninsula. Note that a decade ago, Eric Asimov for The New York Times wrote “Even if Godello has not yet reached the level of white Burgundy, it makes sense to compare it to Chardonnay, the grape of white Burgundy.”

With Spain’s oldest institution, CVNE taking the helm here and assigning their top winemakers, mainly Contino’s winemaker Jorge Navascues overseen by Iñaki Sanz, no doubt these are world-class wines. As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate well put, at “this relatively new estate in Valledeorras things have stepped up appreciably while prices remain extremely fair given their quality… An increasing number of bottlings are slowly being issued, focusing on single parcels, and the style leans toward elegance rather than heft. It’s clear that CVNE is strongly committed, so this is definitely an estate to follow closely.”

And Vinous echoes that sentiment with “this relatively new estate in Valledeorras, with 40 hectares under vines, was established in 2002 and purchased by CVNE, of longstanding Rioja fame, in 2017. The wines were already good, but under the watch of the CVNE team, things have stepped up appreciably while prices for the entry-level bottlings remain extremely fair given their quality. Godello is the variety for the white wines, in the tradition of the region… It’s clear that CVNE is strongly committed, so this is definitely an estate to follow closely.”

And we did exactly that to bring you this crazy good value. Now will it last the day? Doubt it.

92 Points – Wine Spectator

“This white is sneaky intense. Subtle aromas of chalk and heather give way to expressive flavors of pear, mango and sea salt. Well-integrated acidity provides a firm structure that gives way to a long, juicy finish. Drink now through 2025. 300 cases imported.”

92 Points – James Suckling

“This is a very pretty white with dense, ripe fruit and freshness at the same time. It’s full-bodied and flavorful with a creamy texture and lively acidity. Drink now.”
