This Rhône-style blend is a textbook example of what can be done in Paso, with an expert at the helm. Owner and winemaker Weston Eidson traversed from Chile, South Africa, Bordeaux, Veneto before he returned stateside and opened shop in 2012. That’s when he linked up with 100-point powerhouse, Russell Bevan and Jason Moore of the infamous Modus Operandi, also with plenty of his own massive scores. With his ascension into cult winemaking complete, he turned to his own brand with a similarly forward, full-throttle, polished feel.

Eidson usually works with fruit from Napa and Sonoma’s best vineyards (Sage Ridge, Bacigalupi, Heintz, Hyde, Ritchie to name a few) except when an outstanding opportunity arises elsewhere. This is the case with the Charger. From vineyards that we are not allowed to disclose, the fruit here is top-notch, often packaged in MUCH pricier bottles. What we can say is that it’s from the neighborhood of famed estates like Alta Collina and Denner! That good fortune spills down to you today because there’s NO chance you’d find this quality for our price.

Aptly a namesake of the iconic muscle car, Montagu is a tribute to Eidson’s great-grandfather, John, who was the second Lord of Beaulieu and a British automotive pioneer who was the first to drive a car into Parliament. John’s son, and Weston’s great uncle Edward, the third Lord of Montagu, continue his legacy having founded the British National Motor Museum and works to preserve British history. He also is a lover of wine, of course, and has his own vineyard that he planted in southern England.

The wine itself is full throttle like a HEMI and lush, just like you’d expect from Silver Ghost’s sister. Deep dark black fruits and candied licorice, kirsch, savory spices and cedar flood the palate. Structure here is bold, concentrated and unrelenting while still bright and playful. It will age elegantly for decades but is a decadent treat right now.

And for how much? $25?! You’ll pay more for a pair of gorgeous, marbled steaks to cook with this than you will for the actual bottle!
