Sold out! Sold out! Sold out! That’s about all you see when checking out the Mastro Scheidt website.
But not for you, dear Operatives! Not only can you get what you want (if you hustle, that is) but we got the inside track, and the insider price on this hidden gem. And over 60% off!
These wines are a little-known project from a renaissance man who is known for his epic pasta making skills and his elegant Old World style of wines, David Scheidt aka The Mastro. With ancestry from Puglia, and extensive experience in fine restaurants, this is the man you want around the dinner table.
After decades of visiting Sonoma County, he knew exactly the vineyards to be working with and exactly the kinds of wines he wanted to make. He focused himself on the greatest sites in Northern Sonoma and got to work in 2007.
In this ‘double vineyard’ flagship release, he starts with Dry Creek, a tiny appellation with an unusual concentration of top growers. The long, warm growing days allow the fruit to fully ripen, while coastal cooling in the evening enables the grapes to mature slowly and retain their acidity and balance. Kinda perfect for big bold reds, be it Zin or Bordeaux varietals. Then he adds in the so famous that ‘I Can’t Tell You’ vineyard in Alexander Valley that neighbors Jordan and Stuhlmuller, the resulting Cabernet being elegant and nuanced with big bold intensity. Plum, cranberry, and chocolate lead a flavor parade while an array of spice, truffle and clove play an important back up. Well-structured with supple tannins and brilliant acidity, it’s ready will pair with the most elegant dishes.
All that for under $30?! Go for a case and watch your dinner guests jaws drop. You get an ultra-honest wine, made by a truly small, family-oriented winemaker, at a stupidly good price. An easy front runner for Cab of the year thus far. We already loaded a couple of cases into our personal stashes.
But hurry because small and focused means there’s only so much wine to go around!
