Mission Codename Jumping hoops
Just when you think we can’t possibly top some of the recent Cabernet offers, THIS comes tearing across your screen like Usain Bolt and completely shatters expectations…
We recently brought you terrific wines from Heidi’s La Sirena label. This time we’re back for seconds with another screaming good wine by the legendary winemaker… Amuse Bouche Vin Perdu!!
Rarely seen outside the winery, and NEVER with a substantial discount. This one brings double 93 point scores and a 92, along with all the luxury and power you’d expect at the cult level. Minus the obscene price, of course. And here’s a secret you did not hear from the Spies - this is normally a “second wine” to Heidi’s Au Sommet ($220) which wasn’t produced in 2017…we’re not saying the fruit went into this, but we’re not NOT saying it either!!
Heidi Peterson Barrett earned her street cred fashioning many spectacular vintages of Screaming Eagle along with plenty of other smash hits at Dalla Valle, Grace Family, Revana, David Arthur and Paradigm. She also has an eye for creative design and that’s on full display here because this bottle features one of the most unique labels you’ve ever seen. The “lenticular” image actually animates as you view it from different angles, it goes something like this:
But lest you think that’s just some gimmick designed to sell, let’s talk about what’s inside the bottle… HOT damn! Quite aptly described their website as “our best value, most mind-altering wine”, it’s made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cab Franc. Actually the reviews totally capture what’s going on here. “Succulent red cherry, rose petal, mocha, plum and spice are all given an extra kick of textural richness” and “A pure and fruity red with lovely raspberries and dark chocolate” and “plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with underlying hints of candied violets, forest floor, cigar box and bay leaves” all ring true. Can’t say it any better! Straight up HUGE yum factor and 100% the type of wine you’ll want to bust out when company comes over for a special dinner (soon, we hope!).
At our price it’s one of the greatest values in the upper echelon of Napa Valley and a must have for collectors and connoisseurs. Treat yourself!
93 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous
“Proprietor John Schwartz believes California is capable of making wines that can stand toe to toe with the best of France, so he is setting out to prove that point with the help of winemaker Heidi Barrett. Amuse Bouche is the main label. Vin Perdu is the second wine of Amuse Bouche, but the blend varies considerably from year to year, which naturally results in wines that are quite different from each other across several vintages. The 2017 Vin Perdu is racy and voluptuous, not to mention incredibly delicious. Succulent red cherry, rose petal, mocha, plum and spice are all given an extra kick of textural richness in the 2017, a wine that benefits from the addition of fruit that would have gone into some of the higher end wines in a more typical vintage. Plush, opulent and creamy, the 2017 is an absolutely joyous wine to enjoy over the next decade or so. Drink 2020-2029.”
93 Points – James Suckling
“A pure and fruity red with lovely raspberries and dark chocolate. Medium to full body, round and fine tannins and flavorful finish. Drink now or hold. ”
92 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“ Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing to reveal notes of plum preserves, crème de cassis and Black Forest cake with underlying hints of candied violets, forest floor, cigar box and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with black fruits and savory layers, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bright freshness, finishing long. Drink 2020-2034.”
