Mission Codename Alexander the Great

To all those lucky enough to land this wine in your collection, we say CONGRATULATIONS and you’re welcome.

Don’t mention it… this is just what we do, day in, day out…

This has ALL going. Big scores - two 94 pointers. A hefty 42% off. World-class winemaking behind it.

You surely know Chateau St. Jean, the very first Sonoma winery ever to be awarded the prestigious “Wine Spectator’s #1 Wine of the Year” award.

This iconic producer cranks out a fantastically wide array of wines that range from the affordable to the formidable, and always represents a killer value. This flagship Special Edition bottling sits squarely in the latter category AND at our price it’s a surefire grand slam for anyone who appreciates top tier Cabernet.

Made under the supervision of Margo Van Staaveren, the 45th Anniversary Reserve spares no expense, combining the finest fruit and the best lots of the vintage into one polished powerhouse. Margo has 40 (!) years of experience here, and it’s all on full display.

Hailing entirely from top Alexander Valley vineyards that only giants such as Silver Oak or Jordan could have access to, this will blow minds. Heck, it ranks in the TOP-5 of all Alexander Valley Cabs rated from 2015 by Vinous and by far the most affordable at THIS price!

Dropping the mic and picking up the glass…

If wine could give hugs, this would wrap you in a suffocating bear grip of fuzzy warmth. No teeth or claws, it’s all plush and seamless, with a velvety texture ushering waves of warm blackberry jam, cassis, and black plum across your tongue. There’s sweet pipe tobacco, too, some kind of lavender or violet flowers, and dark chocolate shavings, with a bit of vanilla bean and a fantastic dusting of baking spices thrown into the mix. Truly heady stuff, and as James accurately noted, it’s “Full-bodied, chewy and structured with lots of richness.” With five years age it’s just hitting a prime window for maximum enjoyment that should carry through another 5-10 years with ease.

We saved this for a quiet Sunday, so if you’re one of the lucky ones reading this, and you want to level up your Cabernet stash, now’s the time!!

94 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Edition is a very pretty, expressive wine. Plush fruit and soft contours give it tons of up-front appeal. Floral and savory aromas open up over time, but above all else, the 2015 is a wine to enjoy for its lush, resonant fruit. Dark plum, blueberry, lavender, menthol and spice build into a creamy finish in this striking Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau St. Jean.”

94 Points – James Suckling

“This is a one-off wine to celebrate the 45th anniversary of St. Jean. It shows so much blackcurrant, walnut and dark chocolate character. Full-bodied, chewy and structured with lots of richness. Needs two or three years to soften. Try after 2022.”
