Mission Codename Lynchpin

BOOM. Back with a just about half-priced Wine Spies exclusive big-name Saint-Émilion… oui merci !

Cut of the same cloth as its $100+ Château Lynch-Bages sibling, in many ways. It not only shares the Lynch family name and the signature winemaking but is also made in the very same painstaking attention to detail, precision, and obsessive viticulture that has given the Cazes family its reputation.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate attests that “it is incredibly exciting how the personality of Lynch-Bages has been gaining focus and depth over the last 10-15 years” and a part of that quiet revolution has been new ventures like the Michel Lynch project, grafting centuries of tradition and knowhow from Pauillac, Left Bank’s crown jewel, onto the roots of Saint-Émilion, Right Bank’s garagiste epicenter.

How about the ace vintage? Antonio Galloni’s Vinous raves that “Saint-Émilion delivers in 2018. If you want to talk about genuine ‘best wines ever made’ or ‘pinnacles of achievement,’ then this is where to come… It is probably here where one finds the best value for money.”

And THAT we found under the cork…

Vivid and vibrant in appearance, with a core of deep crimson, radiating to a broader flame-red rim. The perfume is pure, aromatic, and sleek with alluring cassis, plum, raspberry, and florally with violets. Once sipped, cherry confiture and baking spices follow, with subtly seductive touches of spearmint and savory earth. The long and complex finish is carried by deep veins of licorice, sweet toast, and graphite. An ideal red for a weekday night Bordeaux call, be it for lamb chops or quick kebabs on the grill.

Michel Lynch himself was born in 1754, and he was the Mayor of Pauillac during the French Revolution. Fast forward to the 21st century, and his spirit lives on in this bottle of stunning value. The name says it all, so much ‘prestige’ in every drop.

Back the truck up!

92 Points – Wine Enthusiast

“Mainly Merlot with a dash of Cabernet Franc, this wine is still young and packed with vibrant black fruits. Rich tannins partner with fresh acidity and a smoky aftertaste. Drink from mid-2021.”
