Mission Codename Holier than thou
We’re going Deep Cover on a majestic flagship cult Rhône as the allocation is small.
Charles Smith’s K Vintners is the Holy Grail of wines from Washington. And THIS is the Holy Grail of the Holy Grail Ks - This wine gets big scores year after year and the 2019 put up an impressive 97 points from Vinous AND 96 points from Mr. James Suckling himself. Probably worth noting the 2016 garnered a near-perfect 99 points from Jeb Dunnuck and the 2018 rang in two 98 point scores from him and James Suckling.
And while the prices just keep going up and to the right, we’re bringing this royalty down to the street level for an unprecedented discount only available to our most devoted Ops.
The House of Smith does a lot of things really well. Syrah though - that’s where the real shine is. Like one reviewer eloquently wrote on CellarTracker, “This is a holy shit wine!” When James Suckling starts his review with “This is fantastic…” you know its only getting better. This monster is priced at the lowest you’ll find anywhere guaranteed.
If you need a Syrah epiphany, this will take you to the promised land without the dry heaving, eight-hour-long dissolution of your ego. While you search for the perfect adjectives to describe the wine in the glass to your friends, time starts warping, sounds slow down, and suddenly you are in an Alice-in-Wonderland experience, where everything you know seems like a distant dream.
Now the bad news, Royal City comes in tiny allocations Which is why this is a Deep Cover, saved for you, only the select few most sophisticated of our Operatives.
NEVER seen under $100, but at this price??? It sure won’t last long!
97+ Points – Vinous
“The 2019 Syrah Royal City is earthy, almost meaty in the glass, as notes of sage and dill accentuate green olive, then evolves to show musky black currants and crushed rocks. This is texturally thrilling, deep and creamy in feel, yet somehow energetic as well, with masses of mineral-tinged black fruits complemented by sweet herbs and tobacco. The 2019 melts away from the palate like molten chocolate, with exotic spices and tangerine to balance. Wow, I can’t wait to see what another four to five years of cellaring might reveal here. Drink 2024-2035.”
96 Points – James Suckling
“Lovely, leafy aromas of fresh garden herbs, drying tobacco leaf, bay leaf, grilled plum and baked strawberry. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, slightly tense tannins. An array of juicy red and black fruit and berries on the palate. Almost some white tea notes come through, such as lavender and chamomile. Focused and long. Best after 2025.”
