Operatives, listen up, you have NO IDEA how hard it has become lately to get a showstopper 1er Cru white Burgundy deal in front of you at a price that won’t make you gulp.

They are needles in the haystack.

As Food & Wine recently succumbed to the fact, “There’s no gentle way to put this: Burgundy has become ridiculously expensive.”

Yet as Andy Howard MW points out for Decanter “As price rises elsewhere across Burgundy show little sign of slowing, the whites of Montagny are offering increasingly good value… although Montagny is often overlooked compared to the more renowned appellations of the Côte de Beaune, it appears that with a greater emphasis on specific premier cru sites and the region’s key producers, Montagny can widen its appeal as a source of terroir-driven, individualistic wines at highly attractive prices.”

Here’s another Master of Wine’s perspective echoing that, a recent video by Bob Paulinski on Montagny, “one of the most overlooked and undervalued white wines in Burgundy” as he calls it:

In the glass, we’re looking at, sniffing, and savoring a textbook ‘vin de terroir.’ This texturally rich beauty has a polished midpalate of citrus oils, minerals, a flinty, chalky character, backed by a juicy backbone of acidity. Marvelously balanced from start to the impressively long finish. Persistent yuzu marmalade and kumquat nuances truly captivate in this white Burgundy, that is rich enough to pair with roast chicken or a piccata be it with chicken, veal, or fish.

Pure, crisp, rich, and mildly buttery, it drinks like a baby Meursault. Add a zero if it were from there!
