Mission Codename Life keeps throwing stones, and we keep finding Diamond Mountains

Just one month ago we brought you the 2018 vintage of this, and it sold out in about three hours.

Not a big surprise, really. Today we’re back for the next vintage and it’s every bit as good as the stellar 2018. Maybe better.

Once again, you get single vineyard hillside fruit, all clone 4 Cabernet, from Diamond Mountain grown in the most excellent 2019 vintage (from back when life was normal, pandemics were not a thing, and fire season wasn’t a threat.)

While the world was under lockdown, Napa took on a historic harvest, defined by Wine Advocate as “more consistent than the 2018s, especially at the lower and mid-range ends and in consideration of some of the higher elevation areas… lovers of Napa Valley red wines in their more classic ripe, juicy, plush forms will want to hop on some of the 2019 offers when they come through and stock up.”

Higher elevation indeed… above the fog line! And Cyrus Creek’s neighbors? Diamond Creek, Lokoya, Constant, Dyer, Reverie, Von Strasser are just a few names that come to mind. Yeah, that’s $95-300+ territory, nowhere near sub-$40 like this.

Also, good luck finding this wine ANYWHERE. Normally sold at a handful of high-end shops or a dozen restaurants in California. Or direct from the winery. That’s it.

And none of them would dream of letting you have it at over HALF OFF…

Moving along to details. Cyrus Creek is a tiny little family operation. They make a scant 200 cases or so of this wine and we scored a fraction of that. They have Massimo Monticelli on as winemaker (and on a personal note Agent Rhone loves this guy - his “Rolando Rosso” Cab blend was one of the first Napa wines that gave him an epiphany when he moved here 13 years ago.) Massimo started at Silver Oak before moving on to his own ventures, under his eponymous Monticelli Brothers and Cyrus Creek. They also have rockstar Mario Bazán at the helm of the vineyards with decades of experience at Joseph Phelps, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars under his belt.

And now the wine. Smooth, rich, robust, and classy as heck. A plump core of blackberry, plum, and dusty blueberry rounds out the complexity with superb minerality, roasted coffee beans, and vanilla. After 22 months in 100% new French oak from Taransaud it picked up a toasty richness, and the dusty mountain tannins carry into a long finish. Dead serious, complex as heck, and drinking like a champ right now even if it’s just a baby. If you can stash some for another couple of years, you’ll be rewarded exponentially.

Let the countdown to zero bottles begin!
