“These are phenomenal wines.” – Vinous
Thank GOD It’s Riesling Friday!
The last time we had one was back last summer when we got wiped out of 5 different Molitor Rieslings like this one in a matter of hours. This time we’re back “prepared” with more than A DOZEN MORE. Each a tremendous bargain, in minuscule quantities, sorted by descending lusciousness. The scores are massive, up to a 100-pointer Appy Friday exclusive to be announced later today.
We’re in the Mosel, dear Operatives aka Riesling heaven, the common denominator being peak acidities to balance all that ethereal sweet scrumptiousness. Each being a RARE micro production gem that needs to be seized like this fleeting moment, when they are gone, they are GONE for good.
How big is Molitor? Of the 50-something Rieslings that have scored 100 points, half are by Molitor. Next are come the likes of Dönnhoff or Fritz Haag… so Molitor is KING.
Take it away Wine Advocate: “Here is another collection like no other from one of the world’s greatest winemakers… The Rieslings are all from renowned steep slate slopes along the Middle Mosel and Saar - something like the Mount Everest, K2 and Nanga Parbat of the Riesling world. What the former dressage rider, race-car driver and pedantically precise winemaker fills into bottles is the very best of what winemaking art has to offer. Dry Molitors come with a white capsule, feinherb (medium-dry to medium-sweet) with a lime green capsule and the sweet with a golden capsule…”
With that guidance in place, they wrap things up by asking “Which wine to choose out of so many if it isn’t one of the costly top scorers? I can’t take this decision off your hands… but whatever you choose, you will hardly be disappointed.”
Choose away, while they last!
99 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * is highly concentrated and clear on the nose that indicates very fine botrytis expression and tropical fruit aromas served on crushed slate. The warmth and generous charm of the Sonnenuhr is concentrated here and comes onto the palate with great finesse and salinity that uplifts and refines the intense and concentrated yet highly delicate fruit. The finish is savory and stimulating and not first of all sweet and rich, which makes this a delicious BA to serve with cheese and also wild game dishes when aged 15 or 20 years. Drink 2035-2100.”
