Mission Codename Lady of Fruits
Poggio Salvi! The winery that keeps on giving incredible Brunello deals!
First it was their 2017 Riserva and then their 2018 Pomona, and now, the vintage you’ve all been waiting for… 2019!
With a much deserved 94+ and 95 points from the pros, this is a must have at our sub-$40 price.
Lest we forget, these take us right back to our Vinitaly visit:
where it was love at first taste.
Luca Belingardi believes in making traditional Brunello. Expressing its unique terroir in the best possible way, it was his grandfather Pierluigi Tagliabue who created Villa Poggio Salvi in 1979. Pierluigi was in a partnership with Biondi-Santi - yes, that cult winery known as the beacon of classicism in Montalcino. To create the best possible Brunello that truly reflects prized terroir, Belingardi chose Vittorio Fiore, the Director of the Italian Association of Enologists in the 1970s, and rightfully credited as “the inventor of the profession of consulting winemaker.” He helped make Caparzo, Conti Costanti, Vecchie Terre di Montefili, Poggio Scalette, and many more.
The truth is in the glass as it shows a striking Brunello blessed with gorgeous clarity and precision in an effortless, weightless style. Dark cherries, tobacco, incense, dried flowers, and minerals come together beautifully in a sensual, understated wine. Tobacco, licorice, menthol, and balsamic, add complexity and character to the vivid, textured finish. This is a fabulous effort, no doubt, some to cellar, some to enjoy now.
Per Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “Higher elevation and limestone-rich soils are the key to success at Poggio Salvi. This winery and vineyard, close to the town of Montalcino, looks to the northwest, and the wines are produced in a traditional style, aging for 30 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.” And what does that result in? Not far removed from the neighboring Bindi-Santi school of winemaking in style, yet it’s 95 points and UNDER $40.
Going, going…
95 Points – James Suckling
“The sweet yet distinguished nose leads with notes of dried cherry and roses, then turns umami with aromas of stone, coffee and herbs. On the palate, fresher streaks of cherry and plum emerge, along with a bitter orange undertone, before a citrusy finish. Tannins are taut and youthful, like an athlete in their prime.”
94+ Points – Luca Gardini
“The Brunello of the Tagliabue family project is an elegant version of the typology. Nose that opens on notes of wild sage, then black cherries under alcohol and hints of Valdostan mint. The sip is briny sapid, with a fruity and balsamic return. Close with mentholated sensations…”
