Mission Codename Right Said Fréd

Magnien! Meusault! Over half off?! Madness!

Madness? This. Is. MEURSAULT!!

Sorry, but this has us fully charged up like Leonidas, ready to storm the warehouse to take it all for ourselves.

White Burgundy prices are only going one way. UP. Like way, WAY up. So, getting a fantastic Meursault for over 50% OFF seems like something out of a fever dream. Just consider Coche-Dury’s village-level 2019 Meursault $1,499.97 on sale here for comparison and you’ll begin to understand where we’re coming from.

But this, this dear Operatives, will get you that sublime Meursault-ness for 55 bucks. It’s no village blend either, Les Peutes Vignes is a prime vineyard wrapped around by Premier Crus like Les Plures and Santenots. In other words, this is not just superbly crafted Meursault, but a STEAL at a whole other quality level.

Being in Burgundy, next, we need to scrutinize the maker and the harvest. Connoisseurs know that the Magnien name equals magnificence.

Frédéric and his dad Michel are megastars. Master of Wine and Burgundy specialist Jasper Morris profiles them well: “Frédéric Magnien is widely regarded as one of the shrewdest and sharpest young winemakers working in the Côte d’Or today. His father Michel Magnien is a well-respected vigneron who produces wine in his own right, as well as being responsible for the vineyard management of Maison Louis Latour. Frédéric Magnien is the fifth generation of his family in Morey-St-Denis. Having worked with his father after wine school, and then traveled to work with Pinot producers in California and Australia, Fréderic rejoined his father in 1993 and two years later created his own négociant label, which has proved one of the recent success stories in Burgundy.”

When Vinous remarked a decade ago that “Fréd Magnien, who seems to have been making wine forever but is still only 38 years old, continues to take his wines to ever-higher levels” they did not see this coming. Imposing, intense, and concentrated, this weighty white hits one punch after another, with lemon, honey, mocha, and toast, all in a movement of sheer harmony. The finish is clean, fresh, long, and oh-so-refined. With any seafood really, or cheesy, creamy recipes, it will SING.

The 2019 white Burgundy vintage harvest according to Burghound yielded wines that are “ripe yet very fresh… at once concentrated, powerful, serious and for the most part well-balanced.” While he did not rate this vintage, the 2020 got an ‘Outstanding’ from him, where he remarks that “this is a solid Meursault villages that is worth considering”.

And that’s at the $115 release price. Ha!
