Mission Codename Quality & Quantity

“The 2018 vintage was superb.” - Michael Silacci, Opus One

The wine, the myth, the legend! A jaw-droppingly rare chance to grab the 2018 Opus One, at an unheard-of price that you simply will not find elsewhere, guaranteed.

The product of Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild has reached 40 years of age with this extraordinary and more collectible than ever ANNIVERSARY release.

And it’s a special one.

While it’s never a giveaway, we have the best price ANYWHERE - albeit on a VERY LIMITED number of bottles. We begged for much more, but alas, it is what it is.

If you’re reading this, you’re one of the few receiving the offer. We expect it to go fast, so please, please get some NOW before it’s gone.

As always, it brings big scores. 99 points from Suckling. Wine Advocate rated it 97-99 calling it “a truly magnificent Opus One.” A good chance there’s a 100-point score on this one in the future.

Under the direction of winemaker Michael Silacci, they have pushed the envelope even further each year. He’s been at the helm since 2001. The result is a hedonistic but dialed-in and balanced example of Napa Cabernet’s highest potential.

The painstaking level of detail is unmatched. One example: they isolated 50 strains of native yeast in the vineyards and picked six favorites. This is the FIRST vintage fermented entirely on native yeasts. The resulting translation of terroir into the bottle has never been clearer.

100% new French Oak as always. The Cabernet Sauvignon was so good in 2018 that they elevated the usage to 84% and the supporting roles of the other Bordeaux grapes. A beautiful purity of fruit radiates with cherry compote and bittersweet chocolate, graphite, violets, and minerality galore. Obviously, you can enjoy it now. But give it a few years, and it will really sing.

Nothing much else to wax poetic on because if you know, you know. And if you’re still reading this, the few cases we have may already be gone.

99 Points – James Suckling

“Extremely perfumed and floral with lavender, lilacs and violets to the sweet, ripe berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants. Some slate and graphite, too. It’s full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes. Fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and lemon grass highlight the dark fruit. The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement. Lasts for minutes. So wonderful to taste now, but better after 2026.”

98 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“During my recent visit to Opus One, I tasted five vintages of the ‘grand vin,’ including a barrel sample of the 2019, which will be published separately in a dedicated report. Comparing the 2018 vintage with 2019, winemaker Michael Silacci commented, ‘There’s a little more richness to 2019. 2018 is elegant, and that’s not an excuse for being lighter. I like the intensity of the 2018s - 2019 is a bit above it. 2018 was cooler with a little bit more acidity.’ Both vintages are a triumph at Opus One and a testament to the subtle changes that Silacci and his team have been conducting in the vineyards and winery over the last 15+ years. Bravo! Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Opus One soars out of the glass with bright, bold boysenberries, warm cassis and ripe, juicy black plums notes, plus emerging nuances of lilacs, oolong tea, cinnamon stick, tilled soil and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with tightly wound layers of crunchy black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with lifted fruitiness and on a lingering mineral note. Drink 2024-2058.”
