Mission Codename To André, Joe & Martha

“A grand cru in the purest spirit of the word.” – James Laube, Wine Spectator

Here ‘Tis. THE Martha’s. As iconic a Napa Cab as it gets. Boasting 96 and 95 points!! And available ONLY to our intrepid app users - at the lowest price around, naturally.

Under his mentor André ‘the Maestro’ Tchelistcheff’s guidance, Joe Heitz’s first harvest was in 1961, and up until 1965, he made one Cabernet from the best possible fruit he could source. One of those sources was a vineyard he called Martha’s and it stood out so much in the blend that in 1966 Heitz made history by releasing the first single vineyard designate Napa Cabernet ever. Martha’s stood the test of time and is arguably the most important and valuable Cabernet ever created.

The 2016’s appearance in the Wine Spectator Top-10 at the very top for a Cabernet, is quite the accolade. Yet the legacy of Martha’s is so towering that this recognition is dwarfed by superlatives that have been collecting around this icon for over a half-century since its humble origins.

Eric Asimov of The New York Times says it best: “The Heitz method of making Cabernet Sauvignon, with a premium on high acidity and low pH, runs counter to many cherished current beliefs about how great wine ought to be produced. Many Napa Cabernets might have been made with similar methods back in the 1970s. But today? Heitz is practically singular. Half a century ago, since shortly after Joe and Alice Heitz bought a small property in 1961 in St. Helena, Heitz Cellar’s Cabernet Sauvignons, particularly its Martha’s Vineyard bottles, were among the most prized wines produced in Napa Valley.”

Martha’s on Wine Spies marks a historic first, like our brand new app, times are a changin’, ha!

96 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard barely hints at eucalyptus on the nose, with much more emphasis given to black cherries and cassis. This is full-bodied and rich, nicely balancing richness and texture against linear shape and focus and picking up hints of blueberries and spice on the long, mouthwatering finish. Drink 2023-2035.”

95 Points, Cabernet of the Year – Wine Spectator

“This throws off an overt and alluring mint aroma, while sweet bay leaf, violet, damson plum, red tea and steeped griotte notes all glide through together, carried by remarkably fine-grained tannins. Ends with a gentle echo of mint on the finish, while a subtle minerality chimes through as well. A stylish and suave wine, with plenty of charm now, but also pristine balance for cellaring. Best from 2022 through 2038.”
