Mission Codename Less is more
“Robbie Meyer is obsessed with consistency; he believes every grape, every cluster, every grapevine should be meticulously managed.” – Wine Spectator
Understood, so when we see a $25 price tag for a Chard by Mr. Meyer it begs one question. HOW?!
Just a few weeks ago the Twelfth Labour Cab took the site by storm, and now THIS?
A reminder that per Wine Spectator consulting winemaker Robbie Meyer, who has worked at Peter Michael, Aubert, and Lewis Cellars, heads the winemaking” here.
And those Chardonnays START at $70 and go for up to $700.
Where were we? Oh, Wine Spectator - they add “Twelfth Labour is a collaboration Benson launched with her late husband, Tom Benson, the longtime owner of the New Orleans Saints… In 2015, they partnered with Ruston Family Vineyard in St. Helena to create the brand. John Ruston oversees the project… the name is from Benson’s business career, which stretched from selling cars to banking to multiple sports franchises to brewing. Benson told his wife that wine would be his 12th industry. The label features Hercules subduing Cerberus, the three-headed hound of Hades, which was the famous hero’s 12th labor.”
Originally these were only available in select restaurants around New Orleans. But today it’s destined for your doorstep at a fraction of its inherent worth. A passion project of this caliber is what happens when you own an NFL team, an NBA franchise, and a brewery, among many, many other investments… These wines were left to quietly age in the winery cellar waiting to be discovered like King Tut’s tomb. It’s our (and your) luck that they were at their prime when we unearthed them.
This one in particular is actually 100% a SINGLE VINEYARD Chardonnay, which due to an NDA agreement had to be concealed as Russian River Valley. Situated in the heart of the coolest Green Valley sub-region, this ranch is infinitely famous, adorning labels by cult wineries. In fact, another label too close to mention to this one is described accurately by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate as “silky, lifted and ripe, with mineral character adding tension and a long finish laced with floral perfume…”
No doubt this Chardonnay is for those who love the bigger, buttery, “California” style. Ripe, juicy, and big with spicy pear, apple, fig, and melon, turning supple, and creamy on the long finish where fabulous flavors fan out with nuances of butter, and butterscotch fold alongside the backdrop of juicy passionfruit, golden pineapple, and rum raisin bread pudding, all lingering effortlessly for nearly a minute… For the ultimate pairing, we say skewered diver scallops rolled up with bacon and a maple glaze grilled to golden perfection.
This is our only other vintage, so when it’s gone, it’s GONE.
