Mission Codename Summer bloom
“Charles McKahn, 32, winemaker and owner of McKahn Family Cellars, is a 2022 Forty Under 40 Award winner.” – North Bay Business Journal
ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) gang - rise up! We know you’re out there!
The 2020 was very, very good. The 2021? We’re calling it “outstanding”. And we aren’t alone.
Like its sellout predecessors, this earned a healthy 93 Points from Wine Enthusiast. And at 40% OFF it gets us right in the feels. Complex, balanced, beautifully textured, tasty as heck.
From a small family winery, they simply crush it every vintage. Harvested from Catie’s Corner Vineyard, owned by the Kunde Family and farmed by the Duttons. The same vineyard appears on prominent labels like Copain & Joseph Swan. Whetstone, DRNK, and SoMa Cellars are some of the names who make a Viognier from here too - each one priced higher than what you can get this one for today.
It’s popping with orange blossoms. Busting with white peach. Dripping with honey. Zipping with lemon curd and pumping plenty of apricot-fig jam. It has a little weight, and that classic Viognier mouthfeel - somewhat oily and viscous – yet vibrant acidity keeps everything in check. Not that insipid, heavy, thick kind of Viognier - it has that scintillating freshness and lively edge we love to see. And when it’s 98 degrees on Tuesday this coming week, it’s EXACTLY what we’re pouring.
It goes down almost too easily. We declare it entirely worth the $45 the winery was asking. Many a $100+ Condrieu would pale in comparison. At our price? It’s a REEDONKULOUS steal. A SUMMER SIPPER of the finest type. When we read that Jim Gordon note “Serve instead of a Sauvignon Blanc with appetizers or a seafood dish” all we could say was “bingo”.
Do yourself a favor and be among the savvy Ops who take some home while you can. You’ll know you made a good call when it hits your tongue.
93 Points – Wine Enthusiast
“Walking the fine line between too lean and too ripe, this brilliant, well-balanced floral wine offers lively acidity, fresh green apple, citrus blossom and white peach flavors that won’t quit. Serve instead of a Sauvignon Blanc with appetizers or a seafood dish.”
