Mission Codename Don't be koi now
Another crazy deal from the Lurton family, the kind that Wine Advocate calls classically styled, restrained wines that represent great value.
Yet we’re obliged to ask, did they mean the full $60, or the STEAL ME NOW $27 we have it down to?!
A succulent Cabernet entirely from Vérité’s neighbor on Chalk Hill AND it’s 94 points?!
Gonzague and Claire Lurton of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral in Pauillac and Château Durfort-Vivens in Margaux set their sight on making wine in California. And they hooked up with the master of the craft Pierre Seillan of Verité to make it happen. With countless 100-pointers Verité is an undisputed crown jewel of Sonoma. He helped the Lurtons zero in on a neighboring Chalk Hill plot to build Trinité Estate. With a deep history in Bordeaux and the help of Pierre, they were destined to reach the stars.
Sonoma County Gazette brought this hidden gem of an appellation to the fore: “Chalk Hill has earned its stripes as one of the County’s most distinguished wine-growing areas.” With one hit after another coming from other visionaries like Chalk Hill Estate, Calluna, and Arnot-Roberts it’s about time Chalk Hill got more recognition.
And this is a perfect example of all the possibilities. Lush and polished, while showcasing a classic Médoc profile, with richer and riper California flare on top. Racy raspberry, and red currant fruits with a creamy, supple texture. Seductive toast and spice notes emerge on the back end, pushing the darker fruit tones and exotic sweet spices to a lengthy, suave finish. At $27, it’s the ultimate weekday grilling companion.
Honest to goodness and most importantly an insane value for the beautifully pure Cab it is!
Don’t let it get away too…
94 Points— James Suckling
“A solid red with currants, black chocolate, mushrooms, and black truffle. It’s full-bodied with chewy yet polished tannins and a flavorful finish. From organic grapes. Needs two or three years to come together, but already a beauty.”
