Mission Codename Dr. P's Franc n' stein
The hits keep coming!
An all-time Operative favorite returns and this might be our favorite wine from them, ever. That’s saying something, considering how many wines we’ve sold from Hawk and Horse.
But with TWO 94 point scores and under $30?! Can you blame us for falling in love with this stuff?
If you like your reds big, plush, ripe, and structured, you’ll dig this.
And if you’re new, here’s the skinny on why Hawk and Horse is so immensely popular with the crowd.
First, their winemaker. Dr. Richard Peterson. Haven’t heard of him? You’ve surely heard of Screaming Eagle and Heidi Peterson Barrett. Get this - before Heidi, it was her dad, Dr. Peterson who led the first four vintages of Screaming Eagle into cult stardom.
They also have some absolute prime land to grow grapes. High elevation, volcanic soils, and biodynamically tended vines provide the fruit.
This stuff doesn’t tread lightly either. It’s dialed up to 11 with a massive core of red raspberry and black cherry. Clove and allspice enter the mix, with pencil lead, and hints of fresh herbs and spices, filling out the complexity. Tasted blind you might peg this is a big ol’ Napa Cab - it has a towering structure thanks in part to the fine-grained tannins, and a mouthcoating style that echoes a lengthy finish behind. When we sampled this alongside some other very big-name Cabs and Reds, it was a clear standout - just a plan ol’ well made, near-flawless rendition of Cab Franc.
Same as before, we don’t have much. And again, if you can score some, you’ll be happy you did.
94 Points, Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast
“Absolutely lush and mouth-coating, this super-concentrated and deeply colored wine made with organic grapes overflows with blueberries, black currants, and dark chocolate. Its abundant tannins are velvety, warmly wrapping up the rich fruit and spice flavors. Best from 2026-2032.”
94 Points – The Somm Journal
“From the producer’s 18-acre estate, this wine shows creamy, tarry notes of licorice-covered boysenberry that glide easily across the palate. Peppered violets and tobacco demonstrate density and texture as a wave of melting dark chocolate leads to the finish.”
