Mission Codename Princess and the Pich

“You know that every wine they make is going to be somewhere between outstanding to just tremendous.”

Galloni nailed it with his comment about Purlieu.

So naturally, when we had a chance to land another one - we jumped! You can rarely find this wine for less than $49 anywhere - so our price… $29?! Hard to believe.

When we last rolled out the flagship Purlieu Cabernet it sold out in hours. Then we landed this very same Le Pich, and it followed suit.

This time around? Probably won’t be any different, so stake your claim while it’s here.

After all, Le Pich represents one of the finest “second” wines in Napa Valley, made by 100-point winemaker Julian Fayard.

Julian hails from just outside Lyon, France. With a few wine degrees under his belt from UC Davis, he set off to conquer the winemaking scene, starting at Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Smith Haut Lafitte, and others. Then he landed in Napa Valley. He worked alongside the illustrious Phillipe Melka, producing extraordinary wines from Lail, Vineyard 29, Metisse, Dalla Valle and MANY other high-end producers.

He’s solidified his name among the ranks of the greatest winemakers in the world at this point. And today he focuses primarily on his own ventures - Purlieu and Le Pich in particular. The latter being the “sister” wine of Purlieu, and for these Cabernets he pulls fruit from premium sources - Beckstoffer To Kalon, Missouri Hopper, Martinez, and Teucer - none of which were made into their own single vineyard in this vintage, so guess what’s in here! Like prior vintages, it “hits the palate with authority, serious extract and richness” to borrow a phrase from one of Wine Advocate’s reviews. Jeb Dunnuck says for another Purlieu: “If this beauty doesn’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will.”

Past releases described as being a “total charmer” and “full body…round, impressively textured.” And this is no different. Balanced and broadly shouldered with fruit. It pops with crushed blueberries, boysenberry, and dark cherries. Sweet spices and windswept herbs make an appearance, too. Medium to full-bodied, with supple soft tannins, and an overall balanced feel - it’s hard to find fault here.

The value proposition is impossible to beat.

We’re lucky to have found more of this. What little we could gather up will be gone by the end of day.
